Dyeing yarn with "Cake" dyes & steam setting

??? I needed some yellow wool and decided to try and dye some myself, as i had cream here. I put water in a pot on the stove, added some lemon juice and brought it to nearly a boil. Turned off the heat, added my dye, mixed well and added the yarn. Covered it and let it set a bit.

Took it out, carefully rinsed a little, put it in some saran wrap on a plate and microwaved it for 4 min on 50% power.. Was that enough to steam set it.. ??? I've no idea, never done this before..

How do I make sure the dye is set and color fast?

I have only set mine in the oven- but I think it should be fine. Have you rinsed it well and if so did it bleed? (And by cake you mean like wilton?)

Do it at 100% in the microwave for 5 minutes, rest 5 minutes, 100% for 5 minutes again - make sure it's still wet. If it has already dried, then to be on the complete safe side, I'd soak it in water with a few glugs of white vinegar and then heat set it in the microwave as above.

Lol- I've never dyed yarn, which became obvious when I had to read the post twice because I actually thought "Cream? You need cream to dye yarn? What type of cream?"

Ha ha!
