Someone needs her wrists slapped

Thread Starter
It wasn't until I started making the mac & cheese that i realized the two cans of evaporated milk I bought were NESTLE!
I couldn't believe it! I thought I was always conscious of the label. Many times I have put back European sweets and beverages because I saw in very fine print on the back that they were imported by Nestle. Here I bought two cans with N***** boldly emblazoned across the front.
Funny thing is, I remember looking at the no name brand and watched my hand be guided by some invisible (evil) force to pick up those darn red and white cans.
That will never happen again.
It just goes to show you the power of branding and mass marketing.

There's a company that we've been boycotting for about 10 years and every once in a while I pick something up that wasn't formerly made by that company and I want to slap myself. So, I know how it is...

Don't you hate when after the fact you notice things like this? On a mostly unrelated note: I have been surrounded by Nestle since moving to Alberta! Nestle water, Nestle ice cream, Nestle candy...stuff I've not even seen in the states. It's overwhelming. I never saw the brand name plastered in so many places.

Well, it could be worse. Could have bought the formula......give yourself a break. Life is to sweet to wallow over mistakes.

You could take it back to the grocer and make a big deal about it being a nestle product and how you boycott nestle and make a general fuss. Might be able to educate who ever is working in customer service.

:

Nestle currently has a permit to draw up to 3.6 million litres of water per day (almost 1 million gallons) from our local aquifer to be bottled and sold (as Aberfoyle Springs water).

Then I see their brand name everywhere.... and it's like rubbing salt in the wound. :

I thought that the formula was not a part of the boycott?

Yes it might be the reason for the Nestle boycott but I believe it is not a part of the boycott because oftentimes when a baby is fed formula it sometimes can only tolerate one brand. Some babies will be fed formula, there is nothing that can be done to prevent that, and those babies need to be fed the brand/formula that works best for their system. Denying them Nestle brand formula just because of the boycott could potentially harm the baby which is not the point of the boycott. Punishing the baby serves no purpose.

The point of the boycott is to protest the marketing of Nestle formula, especially to poor mothers in Africa, who get free samples in the hospital, the babies are hooked, the mothers dry up, then end up sending enormous amounts of money on formula. These mothers then have to resort to diluting the formula, the water is not always sanitary, and they don't have the facilities to sterilize bottles. These are the babies that eventually die of diarrhea.

I feel you, I just found out hot pockets were distributed by Nestle! I had no idea! So I looked up a recipe for calzones and have started stocking the freezer. I figure it was a sign that I need to eat less processed crap.

sophie ann - we have the same problem here in FL with nestle & zephyrhills

as stated above - nestle formula is NOT part of the boycott

LOL - the last time I did something like that, *I* wasn't even the one to notice it. My dh was giving my the hairy eyeball and I had no clue why. Then he said something like "I thought we didn't buy Nestle stuff".
D'oh!

I didn't know anything about Nestle! We need a lactivism 101 sticky that tells us about this stuff!

Can't we TRY to boycott nestle formula? like try all the others first?

Boycotting formula is punishing the baby. That's not the point of the boycott. It's to punish Nestle. If the Good start is what works for your baby, that's what works for your baby. Why make your baby suffer trying other formulas first? Every time a baby switches formula, more damage to the gut is being done. Formula switching requires serious thought and consideration.

Right, but if we haven't tried Nestle's Good start, we could try everything else first, unless we already know nestle might be a good choice for whatever reason, so then we could still sort-of boycott the formula?

Educate them as to what? The people working in customer service have less than no say in what's stocked on the shelves, and making a fuss at them because you didn't read the label on groceries you picked out just makes you look foolish.

I didn't propose the solution originally, but I imagine what was meant was: Educate them as to Nestle and the beauty of breastfeeding. Any excuse to spread the word is good to me, even if they can't do anything as an employee, they can do something as a fellow citizen. If an impression is made, they may go home and tell all their friends and family about the atrrociousness of nestle!

Anyone have a list of all the Nestle associated companies?

Funny, the formula not being part of the boycott, I mean it's not like a boycott is mandatory or anything, you'd think people would use their best judgement in such situations
post #19 of 27
i don't know how complete the list is since nestle is always buying other companies - but here you go

Considering how many other options are on the market, I doubt that not buying Nestle formula would be punishing babies.
