Does anyone have veneers?

I had one put on my front tooth in 1989. I had to have a root canal and the tooth turned a lovely shade of brown.

Anyway, the bottom part of the veneer has chipped a few times the past few years and my dentist has been repairing it with bonding material. He fixed it the beginning of April and the repair chipped off within a month so he just kind of filed it off to make it smooth and said he thinks the best option is to put on a new veneer.

So right now, I have like half a veneer on. I am planning on getting a new one but it is $$$ and I'm wondering, what would happen if I just didn't get it fixed and maybe tried bleaching the tooth?

Do they actually remove part of your tooth to put on a veneer? The part without the veneer looks thinner than my other front tooth. Will it end up breaking or getting a cavity or something?

Does anyone know?

The discoloration is on the inside of the tooth, I do not think bleaching is going to fix it. Veneers can be done without any enamel removal, but they can be done either way.

Thanks for the info. I might see if I can at least put it off until January so I can put some extra money in our flexible spending account for next year for it.

bleaching will do nothing for the veneer.

you could ask about internal bleaching for the tooth--but it will be nearly impossible to match the shade of the veneer and may require the root canal to be redone.

yes, some tooth structure is usually removed to prepare a tooth for a veneer.

since it is thinner and may be dentin, it has a higher risk of getting a cavity, breaking and/or chipping.

Hey, maybe what I should do is leave the veneer off and then I'll break the tooth off and insurance will pay to cap it!

I'm just a little grumpy that falling down in gym class in like 1977 is now going to cost me $850. I am going to ask the dentist about waiting until January so I could put extra in our flexible spending for next year, at least we could use tax free money to pay for it then.
