wool - is this a crazy idea?

I knit my husband a beautiful wool/llamma hair sweater several years ago as a gift. Sadly, my gage was off and it NEVER fit him right. I tried shrinking/felting it but it shrunk the wrong way (got shorter instead of getting smaller around). I tried un-knitting it and that is definitely not going to work - the fibers are too interlocked at this point. So... what to do with it?

I was thinking I'd cut it up to use like fabric and sew something out of it. How about a diaper soaker?

Questions:
1. I can't remember exactly what kind of yarn I used and I know some kinds of wool are better for this than others (I've read to avoid "washable" wools?). Any way I can tell whether it will work well as a soaker? Maybe wash a test-piece in Eucalan? What am I looking for?

2. Would I treat this like fleece do you think, as far as sewing/patterns go? Maybe it's just too thick and bulky for this.... It's not super stretchy anymore either, b/c of the felting.

3. Any other suggestions on what to do with a few large pieces of knit "fabric"? Maybe a soaker isn't such a good plan after all, now that I think about it....

soaker or even longes (from the sleeves) sounds like a great idea... if it felted, it is not "washable"... washable wools are treated with chemicals that keep them from felting. as long as it is soft enough to be comfy against baby skin, go for it.

sorry i can't answer better atm... one hand typing with baby in other arm, lol
