Harassed for bf at Zoo-update #78

I took the kids to the zoo.

I was sitting on a bench in Australasia nursing my son when a group of high school kids walked by. One of them started saying it was disgusting and gross and illegal, and I should go to the bathroom, etc. He was saying this to his friends, and to their credit, they were telling him it wasn't illegal, and what did they expect me to do- nurse in the bathroom every time blah blah blah (to which he said yes.) He wasn't close enough that I could say anything without raising my voice, which I didn't want to do. (This guy was talking very loudly to make sure I would hear him).

Then when my son was done nursing, I caught up with them. I asked one of the girls which school they attended, and I plan on calling them. Well I did call but no one was there, so I left a message for them to call me.

So anyways, I went up to the guy and told him that his comments about my breastfeeding were unwelcome and that I can breastfeed where I like, and it is protected by the Ontario Human Rights Commission.

So he starts going off on me about how what I was doing was illegal. I was exposing myself. I could be arrested. Blah blah blah. Add in a few f words in there. (I wish I had have remembered to tell the guy that women can go topless here if they want, so it would be pretty freaking hard for me to get arrested for exposing myself.)

I was just flabbergasted, like this ignorant kid knows more about breastfeeding in public than I am.

So I told him I was getting a Zoo employee. He was all "I wouldn't do that if I were you because you will get in trouble."

So I told the zoo employee who called security. Security came, got his info, kicked him out of the zoo, banned him for a year, and they are sending a letter to his school.

The first guy I talked to, the security guy, and another security guy who came to see if we needed help were all so nice to me, asked if I was okay, said that he was completely wrong, and it was unacceptable, etc.

I was very happy with the way they handled the situation.

as a highschool teacher i can offer some insight....maybe. i think he wanted to be unruly and instead of throwing things at the animals he picked a fight with you. kudos to you and the zoo staff for the consequences.

I am going to assume (by two things - your location of southern ontario and the australia exhibit name) that this was the T.O. Zoo?

I've NIP'ed there too, no issues - got a few stares but that was it. I think ppl stared more at the sling than they did at NIP. T.O. Zoo employees are actually very decent people. Glad you turned a negative into a positive.

Sorry you had to go through the negative part though, sounds like his friends had more respect than he did too though.

Thats so freaking awesome. I haven't had any negetive comments as of yet....but i'm always expecting them i guess. Which zoo were you at? We are going to the TO zoo this summer, so obviously i will be NIP there as well....glad to hear the employees are so great

hrm, I wonder if that little punk would have thrown rocks at the zebras if their babies started nursing... I hope the school is compelled to educate thie students about breastfeeding. Maybe you could write them a letter? I mean, bf pertains to civil rights, right? Schools are supposed to talk about that...

Yeah I am going to talk to the school today, hopefully. One of my thoughts was writing a letter to read to the class. If the school was closer, I would want to go and talk to the class, but the school is far away from me.

Yes Sheal- it was the Toronto Zoo.

Hurray for fantastic zoo employees. I bet that kid was really embarrased after all that, especially since his friends were right!!
Wow! That's great that the zoo employees got on top of the situation.

Yes, definitely call the school. I used to be a school counselor
and I would imagine that the principal and supt. would be embarrassed
that one of the students was harrassing a nursing mother.

Boo on the terrible kid.

Yay for you for standing up for your right to nurse L and for not letting him get away with bullying you.

Lissa, you're always awesome, but wow! You really handled that well.
