I'm wondering, anyone have any idea how latex mattresses compare to temperpedic? Dh really wants to get a Temperpedic, but if we could go natural and get a similar result, that'd be awsome. And maybe cheaper, haha.

Latex Vs Temperpedic?

I have a temperpedic & do not recommend it. It was comfy for the first 2 years or so, then started to sag & now has two deep body imprints in it. I want a new bed - dh still likes it since he has a shoulder injury & feels better in a bed with lots of give & doesn't mind laying in his "groove" all night long. If either of you is a back or stomach sleeper, don't get temperpedic, once the grooves/imprints develop you'll have a very sore back since you body ends up comforming to the dip instead of the mattress comforming to your body. I tolerate it atm since I side sleep while nursing, but on the nights I mistakenly roll onto my back I am hurting the next day. If you look up the reviews, you will see the sagging/imprint happens to many people at about 3 years & they consider this normal wear so it's not under warrenty.

Have you ever been to www.foambymail.com ? We got ours from there (it's just like the temperapedic.) but they also have latex mattresses too and a fraction of the prices elsewhere...

We had a TempurPedic and ended up sending it back within the three month trial period b'c I couldn't sleep w/o back pain unless I put our yoga mats on it (2 mats - one on top of the other) to make the bed more firm. And it had a very weird odor that lasted the whole 2.5 months that we had it. Dp was alright with it, but didn't love it either. & when we'd lay close together, we'd squish too into each other - the mattress just formed ONE huge well that we both had to struggle to get away from.
We never slept on it with an infant but my neice who was six at the time, slept on it with us for the months that she was staying here & didn't like it. Although I think *possibly* thats b'c she couldn't jump on it... as nothing bounces on tempurpedics!
Maybe check if they still have - or would grant you - a free trial? The one we tried included free shipping both ways & to keep their pillow even if we sent back the mattress, fyi.

I've slept on both, and the natural latex is the hands down winner for me.
I move a lot in my sleep, and the latex 'rebounds' in a way that memory foam doesn't. On the tempurpedic after 1/2 an hour I feel like I'm sleeping in a hole I can't easily roll out of. From a perspective of comfort/ergonomics only, the latex is better for me.
From an air quality/environmental standpoint, it's a no-brainer (IMHO.)
I took the plunge with a wool/natural latex mattress this year and don't regret it.

OH! That was the other question I had. We currently have a regular interspring matress with a pillow top and while its very comfy, it doesnt work too well for cosleeping. My dd would roll into me, she couldnt ever be in her own space, unless my dh was sleeping on the couch (which he ended up doing for 2 years because of this)-because with both of us in the bed, the sides sink in and the middle forms a hump that the babe couldnt stay on.
Sooooo...I'm expecting again, I dont think I'll be getting another bed before he's born, so I figured I'd sleep on the futon rather than making my dh do it, but it still kinda sucks. We plan on two more at some point, so finding a bed thats both comfy AND works great for cosleeping would be kick butt. From the sounds of it, temperpedics are a bad choice for that. How are the latex matreeses for cosleeping?

Just be careful in regard to a latex mattress. Overexposure to latex can cause an allergy in some people (that's why there are nurses who all of a sudden develop latex allergies).

I share my latex mattress with my 2.5 year old. It transfers very little motion and doesn't have the 'hole-in-the-bed' thing happen. It's great for us.
I read about and discussed the latex allergy issue before buying it. There isn't much literature on latex mattresses and exposure, allergy or sensitivities. Outside of commercial mattress-selling sites, there are a few links I have:
http://www.dld123.com/q&a/index.php?cid=977
http://ezinearticles.com/?Latex-Alle...ers&id=1030093
(author is a mattress retailer)
http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi...ournalCode=pai
There are definitely no guarantees of a natural latex mattresses' safety, particularly over time. Ultimately, I feel the same can be said of most if not all mattresses. I spoke with the retailer who said the same thing the conventional Internet wisdom seems to be: the mattress is washed, vulcanized and encased in a zippered wool and cotton cover which eliminates (according to him, I'll temper it to 'minimizes') exposure. I don't have latex pillow, so I can't comment on them.

I have a temperpedic pillow and I love that, so thats no problem. I understand the concern about latex exposure, but between the wool and/or cotton cover and then another sheet over that (and a thick one at that, I love flannel, hehe), I'd imagine exposure is pretty minimal. None of us have latex allergies either so thats not a concern.
If I were to make our mattress, I could also ensure a nice thickness of wool surrounding the latex. Now I just have to figure out a way to keep us all in the same bed with this babe! Maybe I can make my own wierd version of one of those cosleeping nests...

we just started sleeping on a latex matress bought from foamorder.com. We were sleeping on a pillowtop mattress, and it was a little difficult getting used to how firm the latex is, but now 2 weeks later I find it very comfy. I think it is still a little too firm, I will probably add a thicker wool topper at some point in the future. Our 3 year old climbs in bed with us at some point each night, and really there is no problem with sagging or shifting. I had a hard time with the pillowtop as well because dh is heavier than I am, so I would tend to roll tword him at night.
You should check out foamorder.com. I found I got a pretty good deal there. I couldn't really afford an organic mattress, so I bought 2 pieces of 100% lated (one 6" one 2") and an organic cotton case. They are not sold as mattresses, so don't have flame retardents, which is what I wanted anyway. I added a wool topper, and voila, home made bed of sorts
I think If I had it to do again, I would order 3 seperate pieces of latex in different firmnesses so it was a little softer. If you are doing it on a budget also check out their clearance section. They had some king sized pieces last time I looked.
I have never slept on a temperpedic bed. I liked my pillow for a couple of years, then it got really saggy to me. And I don't like the way it holds on to body heat, and gets rock hard in colder months. So I am pretty sure I wouldn't like the temperpedic beds.
Hope that all helps, and good luck.

I LOVE my temperpedic!!! We've had ours for over 4 years and and it's still brand new perfect, no difference. It did have a smell for the 1st week, just kept the windows open.
If I were personally rich, I'd go with an all natural mattress, might do that for the kids when they need a new one.

I would go latex if I were you. Many people find that tempurpedic-type mattresses are a bit hot for sleeping. The two types of foam are quite different. Tempurpedic foam is usually firm, but you slowly sink into it as your body heat warms it up. It is not springy. Latex is more springy/bouncy and is cooler to sleep on.
p.s. Foambymail.com has the lowest prices I have seen anywhere.

I've also heard that tempurpedic doesn't work well at cooler temperatures, and if you like the room cool while you're sleeping (as I do) then it just won't work as well. Plus i'm super sensitive to chemical smells, so I'd never get a non-natural bed.
