Recommendations for a Large Sandbox?

Our boys love to dig. When we moved to this house, when they put sod down, we had them leave an 8' square because we were going to plant a garden. Almost three years later, we still haven't started a garden and decided to do container gardening anyway. So for almost three years, that square has been a problem because they like to dig in it. When it's dirt, it isn't a big deal, but when it's mud, it is. We've tried telling them not to do it, but I think the temptation is just too great.

Dh and I were talking a little bit ago about putting a large sandbox there so they can dig. Rather than have a power struggle over what is a normal behavior for kids their age, we'll find a way for them to do it and keep all of us happy.

I want something big and deep enough to actually dig. I know we'll need a cover. I have found a few sites that sell them but don't know if there is one that someone particularly loves.

Also, is there a benefit to a hexagon or octagon over a square or rectangle? We'll have at least three kids playing in it at a time, sometimes five or six. Thanks!

Google on the web build a sandbox. My DH built a HUGE one for my kids last year. It was very easy. The directions we used from the web said, "even you grandfather could do this". It took him a full day to do.

8' square sounds great! I wish ours was larger and deeper - it is 5'x5'. We used cedar, about ten inches deep, and put landscape fabric underneath and seats on the corners. I’d recommend seats because some kids don’t like to be right in the sand. We've had difficulty finding the right cover - tried a tarp but it sagged even with a prop in the middle, tried corrugated plastic but it was a PITA. Right now it is uncovered and all is fine. We were/are planning on building a pergola over the top and figured we cold rig up some sort of cover connected to that. We have a pipe in the ground next to the sandbox so an umbrella can be inserted for sun protection.
