I am very interested in "no pooing" I am also skeptical. Can someone send me a pic of themselves showing their hair. Maybe after not washing it for a week. I need to be convinced!

when I did the no poo, I could pretty much tell a big difference from the very first washing. a HUGE one.
Keep in mind that no-pooing is not a do-or-die/never turn back type of deal.
Just wash your hair one day without shampoo one day, and see what your hair is like once it's dry. If you don't like it, you can always just turn around and shampoo it. It need not be such a big deal.
the best thing to do if you're skeptical is to try it once. If you like it try it again next time. Still like it? Try it again for the next washing.
For me, I LOVED no pooing, and I could condition-wash ever couple of days, but a couple times a month I needed to shampoo because of my (unrelated) scalp issues. (I need a special medicated shampoo for my seborrheic dermititis, it's always been there, and has nothing to do with no-pooing, I have it all over my face and back too..)
You'll find a nice rhythm and routine that works for you.
(ETA: oh. my idea of "no-pooing" is washing with only conditioner. Washing with conditioner "is" washing/cleansing because most conditioners have cleansing agents in them, and the act of washing your hair with water and lots of scalp massage is cleansing as well....were you all talking about not washing the hair at all? because I don't know bout that.
: )

Gaby's mom, I too have sebboria dermatits (sp?) and it was suggested to me recently to try semi-high doses of Vitamin D. Several naturopaths in my area recommend it for several skin cinditions and a friend's brother tried it with great success. He was taking 1000-4000IU per day.
Now, that is a lot of Vit D, and I'm not suggesting you take my info and go do it. But I do think it's worth looking into. I JUST found out I was pregnant again after getting this info, so I've not run with it because I won't take such high doses of anything while pregnant. But if it gets you off the medicated shampoo... Good luck, and I hth.

You can increase your vitamin D by spending 15-20 minutes or so in the sun each day without sunscreen. That is a safer way to get your vitamin D if it is possible.

IIRC there is a blog about no-poo linked on another thread somewhere around here - anybody remember? It was pretty recent.
Anyway, a girl chronicles her no-poo journey for a year or so and takes photos every day. I think she's Australian? Anyway, it was pretty cool.
No time to search right now, but will later if I get a sec...

I've no-poo-ed since umm.... August 07? Ish? That was taken in April 08. I have super fuzzy hair, though, so I don't know what texture you're looking for. All I use is water and conditioner once a week.
Remember, there are levels of no-poo, too.
ETA: Excuse the crappy haircut.

This is interesting, thanks for this info! I had never heard of a connection between vitamin D and sebborheic dermitis.
I think I'll try to get my vitamin D via sun; I had read up about a link between african american's higher cancer rate in relation to their skin pigment and need for more sunlight in order to make enough vitamin d, and i had been intending to get more vitamin d via sun for that reason. (Er...the last time we tried a day in the sun outing, my poor baby and I got eaten alive by mosquitoes.
but that's for another thread...)Now that you mention it, i do notice a significant reduction in my symptoms after a nice day at the beach.
I also had heard that antifungals sometimes help as well, so I had been using grapefruit seed extract drops in my natural hair concoctions, as well, with some success...
(sorry to highjack the thread...
)This is extremely interesting to learn.

There's been a lot of talk about vit d in the news lately and all the information I've seen says it's safe for the general population to supplement with 1000mg a day. Any more than that and you should talk to a Dr. but 1000mg a day is fine.

Are all you moms using just water or are you using baking soda and vinegar rinses?..........I've done this process for a while now and it sure does a nice deep clean. The apple cider vinegar just makes it that much softer. And no vinegar smell once it's washed out. Very economical and no hideous perfumes.

I tried the vinegar/bs, but it just didn't work for my super curly/frizzy hair. I've gone to just water most days and conditioner when things need some lovin'. I also HIGHLY recommend brown sugar exfoliation washes when you want to pamper yourself. Sooo great and your hair smells AMAZING and looks great too.

I just started no poo a couple of weeks ago. I tried just using conditioner, but my hair got too oily. So, I put two cups in my bathroom. One with a tablespoon of baking soda and one with 2tbs of apple cider vinegar. Then, I put those cups in the shower. When I'm ready, I fill the bakind soda cup with warm water, stir it up and pour it into my scalp. I massage it all over. Then, I rinse it out. Then, I pour warm water into the acv cup and pour it all over my hair. Then, I do my regular shower stuff and rinse my hair just before getting out of the shower.
My hair looks and feels so nice. It feels really silky. Normally, I have almost horselike hair that feels kind of rough. I've never felt it so soft before. I'm loving no-poo so far. My hair is my pride and joy (I'm a Leo
So, I was really sceptical that this would work for me.
Good luck
Lisa

I've been thinking about trying no poo. My hair is somewhat thin, straight, frizzy, and kinda greasy. Before I had my 2 DC it was thicker and not so frizzy. I've tried every type of shampoo you can buy at Walmart with no success. Right now I'm using Matrix shampoo and conditioner. I think my hair is shot from all the chemicals. I was wondering if any of you have problems with itchy scalp? I have to wash my hair everyday or else my hair is greasy and I have a itchy scalp.

Years ago, long before I ever heard of No-pooing, I used to take a lot of sea salt baths and sometimes I would add in baking soda. I noticed how much I liked my hair afterwards, and thought I would try not shampooing and conditioning and just do that instead. I didn't last long.
For me I think the main reason why I don't think no-pooing is for me is that my hair is quite porous and picks up a lot of pollution, pollen and other stuff from the air which then irritates my skin and makes me break-out.
My skin does they best when I wash my hair at least once a day. I use Aubrey Organics though so it's super gentle. (Not as cheap though.)
Does anyone else have skin issues with no-pooing?
