Favorite mystery writers?

I used to love Agatha Christie and SAC Doyle when I was a teen. And Poirot is still one of my favorite literary characters (yes, even moreso than Holmes!) But for the past few years, I've been a PDJames freak! I just started reading Ngaio Marsh's books. Any others I might like (based on my enjyoyment of these three authors)?

(I especially like, as you can tell, British mystery writers but any suggestion is good!)

Dorothy Sayers. One of my favorite authors ever, I don't know why she isn't as well known as Agatha Christie (except that she didn't write as many books - but Sayers makes up for it in quality).

Elizabeth George, Laurie R. King, Martha Grimes, Jo Bannister

She's not British, but Carol O'Connell's books are great, too. Very intense, and I've never been *not* surprised by some of the twists or the endings in O'Connell's Mallory series.

i'm really not well read in mysteries, but i like the V.I. Warshawsky series by Sara Paretsky, not least for the reason that she refuses to write about women being victimized because they're women. there's so much of that out there already, i like that she's made the conscious effort to avoid it.

Stephen King is nothing like Conan Doyle, but I love them both. I used to read Sherlock Holmes when I was a teen as well, and now discovering the wonders of S. King.

Try "The Mist", it's relatively short, and it's very hard to put down.
