I discovered I love Imogen Heap - similar artists?

I'm looking for some girl music. Stuff my husband and my sons would probably roll their eyes at.

I love Ani DiFranco, the Cocteau Twins and Imogen Heap, but beyond that I haven't found a lot of girl music I love.

Any suggestions?

Ok, so based solely on Imogen Heap since I'm not particularly familiar with the other two you mentioned...

The first artist that comes to mind is Kate Havnevik. When I first heard "New Day" I actually thought it was Imogen Heap. Now I don't think they sound THAT similar, but I really like her.

Might also try Regina Spektor.

Thanks. I'll check them out.

Try http://pandora.com - you can put in an artist or song that you like, and they will play music for you that is similar...I've found a lot of new artists that I love from using Pandora.

Have you heard Feist?

Maybe also Jem?

Pandora.com is pretty cool. I visit it a lot when looking for new music ideas.

The most obvious would be Frou Frou since that was her band prior to her going out on her own but maybe you know that. (Fav songs Shh, Let Go, It's Good to Be In Love, Hear Me Out)

I was going to suggest Kate Havenick (So:Lo, Unlike Me, Timeless) but I see someone already has.

Some others:

Aimee Mann - Save Me, Two of Us, Wise Up
Cat Power - Wild is the Wind, The Greatest, Maybe Not
Emiie Simon - Desert (Thievery Corporation)
Hem - Not California
Ingrid Michaelson - Breakable
Natalie Merchant - My Skin, Thick as Thieves, Life is Sweet, River
Nouvelle Vague - In a Manner of Speaking
Psapp - Cosy in the Rocket
Sara Bareilles - Gravity
Sia - Breathe Me
Sigur RĂłs - SaeglĂłpur, Ba Ba

Thanks for that pandora link!
That's so cool.
Tori amos is my all time favorite girl music. I'm interested to see what pandora comes up with.

And lots more stuff I like with women only or strong female vocal presence:
Au Revoir Simone
Azure Ray
Beth Orton
Rilo Kiley
Eisley
Dar Williams
Regina Spektor
Tegan & Sarah
Metric
Neko Case (favorite)
Camera Obscura
Camille
The Concretes
The New Pornographers (favorite)
Goldfrapp
Rasputina (favorite)
Mates of State (wife & husband)
Tilly and the Wall
Portishead
Rachel Yamagata

I'm surprised to see Sigur RĂłs in that list since it's an all-male band. Good band, but not girl music.

Thought of a few more when I reread and saw Cocteau Twins on there:
Mazzy Star
The Cranes
Portishead (again, already said it)
Cowboy Junkies

Also! my most favorite place in the world for finding music is http://www.last.fm/

I love how each musicians profile gives you suggestions for similar artists, and the scrobbling software is great. It gives you your closest neighbors in musical taste across the network, you can see what your friends are listening to, you can add nifty toys on your myspace to show what you've been listening to. I LOVE it!

I LOVE Pandora! Love it!

I don't know if you're looking for a particular style of female performers or female-fronted groups. I like the three you listed, and here are some others I like - maybe you'll enjoy them too.

PJ Harvey (White Chalk is really great)
Cat Power
Stereolab
Jesse Sykes
Camera Obscura
The Breeders
Detroit Cobras
Winterpills (not solely female, they have a male singer too)
Sleater-Kinney
Cassandra Wilson
Yo La Tengo
Portishead

In the not for everyone category:
Joanna Newsom
Dengue Fever

There are a lot of other really good suggestions in this thread, too. And a few I'll have to check out.

try also the archives or searching www.kcrw.com in particular Nic Harcourt's show, Morning becomes Eclectic or sounds Eclectic show.....

There are archives of around half of the artists listed here, and you can watch the performance and interview or just listen. (Beth Orton, Norah Jones, Racheal Yamagata, Nouvelle Vague....)

FWIW, he broke Coldplay, Norah Jones, ect.....

I can't believe no one has mentioned Noe Venable yet. I like all the same music you gals do and she's at the top. Her voice is *magical*.

She's been mentioned before but definitely Regina Spektor. Also... Emilie Simon, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Carla Bruni, Zero 7, Rachael Yamagata, Cat Power, and Martha Wainright.

what about Clare Fader? I was going to mention some other artists but most of you have beat me to them.

Daughter Darling
Mazzy Star
Sophie Zelmani
Dar Williams
Tori Amos
Vienna Teng

Those are just female vocalists I like. Bandwise I like Nightwish and Within Temptation, but I'm not quite sure if that would be exactly the genre that you were talking about, but beautiful female vocalists. Nightwish recently changed lead vocals and I like the new one a lot.
