Newborn gift idea?

I want to knit something quick for a couple who I don't know too well but are very good friends of my friends and moving here right before the baby is born.

Any great ideas? Not knowing them well leaves out longies and shorties (will they want to use them/wash them, or would they just sit in the drawer), and we live in the desert so we don't need too many heavy things. I was thinking something as quick and easy as the blanket buddy, but I just knit that and don't want to do it again.

Thanks!

a cotton sun hat? (like the LTK bucket hat)

The giraffe is so cute! I will list off my gift list for all the babies on the way. My BFF is getting a peapod sweater and hat. In something super fabulous (maybe alpaca- maybe cashmerino- she is totally worth it!). My cousin is getting a 5 hour baby sweater and booties out of totally washable acrylic (ick to knit with- but it is only like 5 hours). My sister is getting another 5 hour baby sweater out of the same yarn. I think soft cotton wash clothes with a baby theme would be awesome- but maybe not so much the wow factor.... Or search on Rav- I just favorited a ton of baby stuff..

Could those toys be any cuter? I think not.

Toys scare me. I don't know why. I did a tomato once, it was ugly. Oh, and an egg that looked nothing like an egg.

I will look at the sun hat though, good idea!

A bib would come in handy.

It would quick easy and cheap to make 2-3 bibs with matching mini-wash cloths.

We live in Texas so I understand the need for something light. I made these a bit ago. Super easy, fast, cute, and take absolutely no yarn. I still have yarn left over from the tiny nugget I used! The recipients loved them and asked how to stretch them to make them last longer when the babe out grew them.

Ooh. All such good ideas. The bib would teach me how to make a button hole and those slippers are cute.

I didn't know how to knit when my lo was a baby -- baby stuff looks so fun and fast!

I love the Blanket Buddy from 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders. It's quick, easy, and so very cute. This is the fourth one I've made in the last 5 months!

I second these baby slippers. I made a pair for a pregnant coworker, and people fell over themselves raving about them. They are so easy and quick
