Please HELP!!!! Midwife in KC area?

Hi--I live on the KS side but close to the MO state line, so I need a MW in either state. If prefer a CNM but would consider a CPM. And I want a homebirth. There are lots of midwives around here but most practice at a hospital and I've heard LOTS of bad experiences with both nearby MW hospital-based practices from LLL, etc.

I delivered my first child at a freestanding birth center but they are apparently closed (he is only 14 months old!!!) So now I don't know what to do. I do not think a hospital birth is for me, especially after a birth center experience. I guess I need a homebirth. The only other birth centers I can find are 2+ hours away. . .

I can PM you my Midwife's information.. but since I'm on the Missouri side (she is based out of Kansas) I won't list her name on here.. just to protect her.. ya know?

She does home birth's in Kansas and (quietly) Missouri. She's a CPM though.

I only know of one lady in the area who is a CNM her name is Suzanne Ryan I think and she is legal to do home births in Kansas AND Missouri. I've heard she is fairly good, but being a CNM and all she is very medical and not your normal 'cuddly/best friend type midwife' .... but that's all '2nd hand' info I haven't met Suzanne.

Hi! I was just doing an online search for homebirth midwives in MO and came across Suzanne Ryan's name. I have not yet met her, but am planning to schedule an introductory meeting to see if she and I are compatible.

I live in the KC area, I am very newly pregnant and am planning a homebirth. I would be very thankful if you are willing to share your midwife's information with me. I am totally ok with CPMs, in fact, I may even prefer it that way.

Thanks so much in advance! I hope that all is well with you and your family! : )

Cheryl Gates is a CPM and practices out of KC.

Thanks for the information!

Have you worked with her?
Never worked with her as a client--I know her as a colleague and correspondent I met on the internet (midwifery forums). But in the 3 yrs since we 'met', I"ve also met people who know her from being her clients. Their reports are as glowing as I would expect from the way I know her from onlist and private exchanges both. If that makes sense!

I would be cautious when considering suzanne ryan for your homebirth.

I had Suzanne Ryan for a birth and it was a bad experience. I can't recommend her. She doesn't seem to have a very good reputation. I can describe my birth experience to the midwives I was interviewing and every. single. one. could tell who it is without me ever saying her name. Even an OPR labor and delivery nurse could guess who it was. My CPM was an assistant for a birth of hers and had a bad experience with her at the birth. She got so anxious talking about it that she asked to change the subject.

Yes, it makes sense. : ) I have sent an email to her about meeting...she sounds wonderful, I cannot wait to hear back from her!

Cheryl Gates, not Suzanne Ryan! : )

I have decided not to work with Suzanne Ryan, thank you to everyone for being honest...the persons(s) that assists you while you labor is so very important.

Just so you know, the birth center is open again. It's now called Mercy and Truth. They have the same birthing suites including one for water birth.
