Coconut Oil - Page 2

I keep some in my kitchen and some in my bedroom (to put on my skin after showering, while it's still damp.)

The stuff in the kitchen gets used to pop popcorn, mixed with other oils for frying, and spread on bread in place of butter. I actually buy two kinds: unrefined and less expensive refined, and I safe the unrefined for eating plain, using the cheaper kind for all other uses.

I just got a big ole jar of co, and i put a little bit in a spray bottle of warm water, let it melt, and spray it in my hair. (I have coily frizzy hair in locs right now..) I had no idea what else I could use it for, till I read this thread. (I did notice it made my skin soft wherever I touched it...)

I have keratosis pilaris on my upper arms and 3 days of applying after showers has gotten rid of it. I started today on my son't legs and arms since he has it too. It's harder with a little boy cause the dirt sticks to it when he plays outside LOL!

I have been trying it on his cheeks, but I'll have to get some picstures and post separately about that.

I just started reading this forum tonight and had to post when I saw this. I have KP too tried just about everything to get rid of it. Soaps, lotions, oils. Best thing I have found was to stop washing those parts of my arms. I take a towel and rub it briskly on my upper arms after a shower. After a week I would say it's at least 95% better. Figured this out after an extended camping trip with no showers, just a quick rubdown with water. I rem I got to the hotel and after a good long shower really rubbed down with a towel to get all the dead skin cells off, at home I used a scrubbie everyday, was obsessed because of the KP. After I was dry i was so surprised, my arms had never been that soft, sure a few bumps but it was NOTHING compared to what they were like. I'm amazed that in all my reading to try to get rid of it I never once came across the suggestion.

Thanks! I did try going soapless for a bit, but didn't do the towel thing. Since the CO seems to have it handled, I'll keep this in the back of my mind in case it stops working.

are you using virgin or expeller pressed? i only have pressed/refined because i use it for cooking but i'm wondering if it makes a difference.....

Can anyone suggest a particular brand of coconut oil? I've been wanting to buy some but they seem to vary so widely in price that I wonder what the quality differences are (even among those labeled "organic, extra-virgin")

holy heck i have to start using it as lotion again. I have kp on my upper arms too.
anyway i love it in smoothies and in baking.

I acutally have both refined and extra-virgin. I use each depending on my purpose.
EO goes in stir-fries and smoothies/baking, in my hair and on me/LO/DH
I use the refined for other cooking where I don't want a coconut flavor- eggs, BBQ (although I do sometimes uses the EV in BBQ, depends), etc...

As for brands- my refined is Spetrum and my EVCO is Nutiva.

For those that use it for shaving, does it clog your razor? I tried olive oil once but my razor got really gross right away.

I love coconut oil to put on my legs while still damp.

I also use it as an um...personal lubricant.

Where to find CO?

I looked at my HFS, and forget my local groceries....where would I find it? Can I order it online? What size jar/bottle does it typically come in? I wouldn't need much at first, I wouldn't think.

You can check out http://www.mountainroseherbs.com. They have good quality oils under the Products page and click on Carrier Oils. You can also read about the different methods of extraction and how they affect the natural qualities of the oil. Anyway you can get a gallon of this stuff and more here, but if you just want a small jar you can get some at http://www.amazon.com and just type in "Coconut Oil" in the search engine. There are different brands. If you get a little jar and like it then I would suggest to buy in bulk because it is soooooo much cheaper. I buy mine $30 for a gallon (128oz) but in stores and smaller jars online usually run about $8-$10 for 12oz, which is about 3 times more per oz! I wash my face with this stuff and now that I'm running out of my small jar I've ordered my gallon and am loving it!
