I know a Dexter and think it's a pretty neat name. #824 out of the top 1,000 baby names according to Baby Name Voyager.

I love it! I seriously considered as a middle name for DS (we had already picked his first name) but we used to have a cat named Dexter so his dad vetoed it.

I know a kid named Baxter and I think his name is very cool and off-beat. Dexter has a similar sound and feel.

Actually, I love the name. I would use that name and not worry about people thinking it's dorky/nerdy. I think it has a cool sound to it.

Love it! Love the show too.

In all honesty I do not like the name, but not because it's nerdy.

Yeah, it's not for me either. But you probably know your babe better than I do.

I think it's fantastic!

I'm wasn't sure about Dexter as a long name. But the more I say Dex as a nickname I really like that... so I say go for it

I like the name a lot--the show would be my only concern (I haven't seen it but I understand the main character is a serial killer, right?). I don't think it sounds nerdy these days--I actually think it sounds very cool, and it has a nice meaning, too.

I had no idea it was a show! (No TV)

...and about a serial killer? Yikes! Stupid media.....

hmmm, will have to talk about this with DH

can anyone clarify the contents of this show? is it wildly popular? i.e. will we look like we named baby after the show?

TIA

I like the name. Who cares if it is a serial killer in a TV show...if we all looked hard enough there would be some negative aspect to our names. I doubt every person named Alicia is perfect...even though I am....lol

I haven't heard of that show but I do know about a cartoon character his name is Dexter. Also a video game character.

I like the name but not sure if I name a son like that.... specially because for boys names I prefer Latino ones, but for obvious reasons lol

I think it's a cute name. I had a childhood crush on a boy named Dexter.

Hey all! Visiting from the Sept DDC, as I am due early Sept, but she may come early!

Dexter is a show that originally started out on Showtime, but then moved to some mainstream station (NBC, or ABC, or Fox, one of those). Its based on a book by Jeff Lindsay.

This is what Amazon says about the first book in the series:

"Meet Dexter Morgan. He's a highly respected lab technician specializing in blood spatter for the Miami Dade Police Department. He's a handsome, though reluctant, ladies' man. He's polite, says all the right things, and rarely calls attention to himself. He's also a sociopathic serial killer whose "Dark Passenger" drives him to commit the occasional dismemberment.

Mind you, Dexter's the good guy in this story.

Adopted at the age of four after an unnamed tragedy left him orphaned, Dexter's learned, with help from his pragmatic policeman father, to channel his "gift," killing only those who deal in death themselves. But when a new serial killer starts working in Miami, staging elaborately grisly scenes that are, to Dexter, an obvious attempt at communication from one monster to another, the eponymous protagonist finds himself at a loss. Should he help his policewoman sister Deborah earn a promotion to the Homicide desk by finding the fiend? Or should he locate this new killer himself, so he can express his admiration for the other's "art?" Or is it possible that psycho Dexter himself, admittedly not the most balanced of fellows, is finally going completely insane and committing these messy crimes himself?

Despite his penchant for vivisection, it's hard not to like Dexter as his coldly logical personality struggles to emulate emotions he doesn't feel and to keep up his appearance as a caring, unremarkable human being. Breakout author Jeff Lindsay's plot is tense and absorbing, but it's the voice of Dexter and his reactions to the other characters that will keep readers glued to Darkly Dreaming Dexter, as well as making it one of the most original and highly recommended serial killer stories in a long time."

So take from that what you will.

Hope this helps!

my husband has a car named dexter! It's an early 80's VW Rabbit that he bought back in 98. It is now one of his race cars. So when I think of the name Dexter or Dex I can't help but think of his car In acutallity it was our first child! Both of us have spent a ton of time and $$ getting it where it is today. Lots of love in that car!

here is a pic...my husband is the guy under the car

PS: It is a good name for a strong, adventurous, intelligent boy

Crashing your DDC...

If you're a Cary Grant fan he plays , C.K. Dexter Haven, in "The Philadelpha Story"... one of my favorite movies

I think Dexter (with "Dex" as a nickname) is neat.
