Why Ben and Jerry's (Dare I ask?) I've always heard they pretty progressive/socially responsible. I know how you feel anyway, I feel like I'm boycotting (or trying to boycott) EVERYTHING.

My boycott of Ben & Jerry's is not related to lactivism, so I'll keep it very brief. They were bought out by Unilever, although they operate separately (probably to maintain their reputation for social responsibility). Unilever has an extremely poor environmental record, they sell skin lightening cream to women in India, and they are the primary exporter of fish from the Faroe Islands, the inhabitants of which kill hundreds, if not thousands, of pilot whales a year ("The Grind"--some graphic videos available on YouTube) for sport (which is my specific reason for boycotting).

However, Ben and Jerry's had been a luxury for us, so not really a biggie when they were sold to Unilever, but Dreyer's will really hurt us. DH is diabetic and Dreyers is the only decent ice cream that has "no sugar" varieties. DH is an ice cream addict.

Why a boycott on Breyer's? I have a box of vanilla bean in my freezer right now. But I want to eat guilt free!

Breyer's is simply another of the million or so brands owned by Unilever. Not trying to convert here. Their vanilla bean is freakin' delicious though!

Isn't Breyers and Dreyers different?

I moved from west to east and no one had ever heard of Dreyers.

Yes. Dryers and Edys are the same, it just depends on where you live which name it goes by. Breyers is totally different.

Time to invest in an ice-cream maker, then? Father's Day is coming up.

Interesting (and frustrating!). I don't really eat ice cream, so it's not huge for me (I LOVE it, that's why I won't buy it) and Ben and Jerry's has an ungodly amount of calories anyway... It's just sad to know that a company I thought was actually one of the "good guys" isn't.
My husband often buys Soy Dream or Tofutti. I think both are still pretty high in sugar though... What about local store brands? I live in the midwest and we have Meijer and Spartan Stores, both of which have their own brands of ice cream and I THINK sugar free varieties as well.

What about buying one of those ice cream ball makers? We have one from LL Bean and it takes 30 or more min to make but really fun and also you can add what you want or don't and because it takes WORK you feel so ok with getting to enjoy the treat! But seriously It's tough to stick to supporting quality company's
