Nursing in the foodcourt...

Thread Starter
While running errands today, we stopped for lunch at the food court, and the baby had to nurse, so I naturally nursed her.

An older woman (60s?) came over to me, and said "In my day, we covered ourselves with a blanket when we did that."

I amazingly had an immediate response for her - "We've come a long way, baby! Isn't it great that the world is a more liberal place now?" while smiling sweetly. The woman just walked away.

Sorry she said that to you, but that is a great comeback!!! Sounds like you handled the situation wonderfully! And...maybe...provided a bit of education to her. Way to go mama!

good for you nice comeback!

Quick thinking!

Plus I think it is so powerful when we can (outwardly) project that why on earth would you think this is a problem vibe. I'm not so good at it - but it sounds like you did great!

I always try to give a big smile when I see someone nursing uncovered. It seems like way too many people run into rude people who need to mind their own business.

Way to go OP. Great comeback!!

I still can't believe that people will say things like that to other people in public.. I will never understand. An entire group can watch as some mama yells and 'disciplines' her kid, but when one wants to nurse everyone is a critic..

WTG mama. Brilliantly handled.

Rock on, mama!!!

great job! maybe she'll keep her comments to herself next time.

That's awesome--I envy your comeback ability!

Had to respond to this thread b/c there were 4 of us moms nursing toddlers in the food court play area today. There were no issues, but the solidarity surely helps.

You were quick on your feet!!!

Happily, I've never got a negative comment from 'the public'. I tried to be semi-discreet but never hid in a bathroom stall or anything! The two responses were people looking the other way, or giving an approving smile. For acquaintances who indicated I should be more private about it, I asked if they wanted to eat THEIR lunch in the stinky bathroom.
A question for the prim and proper who gasp at nursing: "How do you think Jesus' mother fed him?"

You rock.

I'm happy to say that I'm never tongue-tied when people confront me like that , but ashamed to admit that my response is usually something like "Shut the h*ll up, you ignorant idiot." :

Thanks for the brilliant lesson in civility (which I desperately need)!

Awesome job! Thank you so much for advocating for us all. It's the ONLY way things are ever going to change. It takes each and every one of us to take a personal stand against ignorance.

The opposite was said to me this week at the grocery by an older woman. I had Matilda in the sling and the woman stopped to look at her and talk to her. Matilda was rubbing her face against my chest and I said that she wanted to eat. The older woman said "Oh, in my day we just took it out and fed wherever we were." She did this while motioning taking her breast out of her shirt.
