Carter Anthony Was Born On His Due Date!

It took me a while to find time to post this.

Carter Anthony was born on his due date May 10th at 2:41 pm. He was 6 pounds, 11 ounces and 19 1/4 inches. We are so excited to have a baby boy! Sienna is happy to be a big sister and loves her baby brother! Real contractions started at about midnight and we left for the hospital at 3:30 am, with a stop to my parents house to drop off dd. I was only dialated 1 cm, but contractions were pretty close together and we live about 45 minutes away from the hospital so they did not send us home. They told us to walk the halls for a few hours to get things moving. At 7:00 am I was 3 cm and was officially admitted. The contractions were getting more painful to the point where I was seeing stars. At around 10:00 am I decided that I would go with the epidural. I really didn't want to this time but I couldn't handle the pain any longer. It was worse than it was with dd. I was actually able to rest a little. It wore off right before it was time to push. I pushed for 40 minutes and dh and I were in tears when we heard the doctor say that we had a boy! I only had a small second degree tear and I have pretty much recovered fully from that. I am so glad that many things happened on their own with this delivery. With dd I was induced and had an episiotomy. My water also broke on its own this time. I am happy with the way everything went and would not have changed a thing.

Carter breastfed like a champ in the hospital. Things started to get difficult at home when the nipple pain became unbearable. I saw the wonderful lactation consultant at the pediatrician's office. She said the problem is that he has a short frenulum (the hospital LC noticed that too) and that is what is causing problems. Our pediatrician doesn't agree with her completely though. The LC (who is also a pediatrician) thinks it should be clipped and our pediatrician doesn't think so. Right now we are going to wait. For a while I could only nurse on one side and pump the other. Now I am back to nursing on both sides. I am determined to make nursing work this time. I really don't want to EP again like I did with dd. I think everything will work out fine and it is getting better everyday.

I still can't believe that I am a mother of two! I was really scared when dh went back to work (he took a week off to stay home with us). Sienna can be challenging at times because she is two years old and Carter wants to be held and nursed all of the time! I am slowly learning how to give each the time that they need, although the house is a bit of a mess!

Oh my! Not in your DDC but he is a cutie.

FWIW, my DH works at home and did a bunch in the beginning when we had our second and our house was still a mess for quite sometime.

Congrats!!

Try and get some more opinions on getting the frenulum clipped - I've had a handful of doula clients whose newborns had the same issue. In general they got lots of mixed advice from peds about clipping...but across the board those who had it done said it was night and day for their latches. It is such a quick and easy thing to do - but lots of peds don't even know how to do it so they say not to do it...anyways - good luck and lets hope that pump can stay in the closet forever!!

Congratulations, he is beautiful!

Can you keep us posted on the developments with the frenulum issue? Both my DSs have short frenulums. With DS#1, I didn't do anything about it except wait it out. Around 9 weeks, we finally stopped the sore nipple/some improvement/sore again cycle. This time around the frenulum seems even shorter. We saw a doctor (family doc) here in town who regularly clips if necessary...they are hard to come by. She had a look and didn't know if it would make any difference for us, but is willing to do it if we want to because she said it's not nearly as traumatic as it seems it might be, she said babies often barely cry when she does it. I am still holding the option in my back pocket as we are doing the same sore/not sore/sore cycle and plus Declan is now breaking suction regularly on the right boob, I can't tell where but am wondering if it's from his tongue pulling in a bit cause he's tired...?

Anyway, sorry to dump all this on you, I just wanted you to know you're not alone!! And it does get easier, clipping or no. But from what I have heard (I have been getting lots of pro-clip encouragement from my LLL leader, not so much from my midwife) it can make a world of difference...definitely see if you can get referred to a doc who does them and is willing to take a look at his tongue for you.
