Making small towns more pedestrian/cycle friendly? HELP

I am looking for resources for small towns that want to become more pedestrian and cycle friendly, such as organizations, federal grants and progs that are available. I don't know where to start, and figured some of you MDC'ers could point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

Oh man, this subject drives me nuts. I'm so sick of sidewalks that lead to nowhere. It's so frustrating living within walking distance to something yet having to drive for fear of being squashed on the street. I don't have any resources for you, but I stumbled on the following site once. You may be able to find some links or the email addy of someone who can help:

it's hard when you're in a small town. just means there are fewer people who feel the way you do. but that's no reason not to try. start a movement!

here's a good resource for what you're talking about. good luck.

It was a smaller town when the routes were put in 35 years ago. The city vehicles run on NG.

Lockheed left, but the movie industry helped to draw in more population.

Niceties as bike routes attract people.

It's funny that you ask this question. My FIL is the Director of Policy Analysis for the National Center for Bicycling and Walking. He travels all over the U.S. and recently to New Zealand giving workshops to mayors and town councils to teach them how to be more Bicycle and Walking Friendly. If you contact me offline and give me a little more information about what you're looking for I would be happy to pass his information on to you.

ETA: the web address is www.bikewalk.org
