Can you recommend a sunscreen for my kids?

Can anyone recommend a good safe not chemical filled sunscreen for my family. I don't really wear much but I try to make sure the kids do so they end up with better skin than mine. Any recommendations? They don't burn (we are brown skinned) so that's not a big issue except my youngest who has lighter pigmentation.

While we're at it- does anyone know if any of these sunscreens come in large sizes? I'm so sick of buying all these tiny 4 oz bottles. We use tons...Irish skin.

We LOVE Badger! Awesome ingredients too.

Everything I've read seems to point to Badger being the "safest" on the market. However, it really isn't strong enough for me. I'm very fair and had skin cancer as a child. I burn easily and when I tried Badger, I got some color in just an hour. California Baby seems to keep me safe for longer, although certainly not all day.

I haven't done a lot of research but I did buy the Alba Botanicals one and the Nature's Gate ones to try.

I would love a larger size, too! Hmmmm I should check the bulk section of my natural market...

I bought some of the california baby sunscreen but I haven't used it yet. I've heard so many good things about it.

We've used Blue Lizard's baby or sensitive. The EWG rated them a low risk and they've worked well for us.

I was checking out the skin deep web site and two that were "safe" that I recognized the names of were California Baby and Badger. There were a few others but I hadn't heard of the brands.

I agree that Badger is the best!!

Does the badger leave the skin white and pasty? That's what I haven't liked about the titanium dioxide ones.

i think the California Baby has the highest SPF rating, it's 30+. it's also water resistant, and they make one that has natural EO's to repel bugs (citronella, etc.). and no chemicals

another vote for badger... it does leave you and baby a bit white, but i don't mind. i'd rather know i'm washing off the sunscreen vs it absorbing into my LO's skin!

I don't know about Badger in particular, but my understanding is that the zinc and titanium dioxide based sunscreens will leave the skin white, unless they are micronized. Some people worry about the micronized particles going through the skin. I heard on NPR the other day that research suggests that's unlikely unless the skin is already damaged in some way.

The chemical based sunscreens won't do this, but I worry about their safety. It is also my understanding that the zinc and td based sunscreens are effective as soon as you put them on, but the chemically based ones need to be applied at least 1/2 hour prior to sun exposure. I'm not that good at planning ahead so we get more protection out of the minerals based ones.

Bottom line: I'm fine with whitish skin in exchange for what I think is safer sunscreen.

Have you ever tried Mexitan? It comes in different spf's from 8 to 50 and it doesn't leave my skin white at all. http://mexitan.com/

I don't know where you can buy it other than online. They do sell large volumes of it (half gallon).

Another vote for Mexitan. The price is very reasonable and you can buy in bulk. They have SPF from 15 to 50 so there's something for everybody. The ingredient list is as natural as it's going to get I think.

I grabbed a bottle of blue lizard since they sell it local to me until I can get the jason's I ordered from frontier. They both had ratings of 1 or 2 which is way better than what I was using. I want to get the california baby but can't seem to find a decent online price or some local.

Here is a link to Randal Neustaedter's website with his most recent info on sunscreens. If you are not familiar with Dr. Neustaedter, he is an Oriental Medicine Doctor. He has written several books on raising healthy kids naturally.

I think Mexitan has titanium dioxide in it.

We use Badger and UV Naturals.

We use clay/healing earth as natural sunscreen with moderate sun exposure only.
