thinking of turning a sweater into a soaker

Okay, I'm new to this and very....le's just say it, dumb, when it comes to fabrics, knitting, how to wash this and that, etc. I have an old wool sweater I never wear. I found a simple pattern for turning it into a soaker, but you have to shrink it first.

Does this just mean I wash and dry it on hot? I don't want to do anything until someone else who's been there tells me it's okay!

TIA!

That's what I did... washed and dried on hot.

What pattern are you using? I have a sweater cut apart on my sewing table and I'm getting ready to use this pattern.

I found this, which I'm willing to try because it looks SO easy. I'm going to do a little more measuring to get a better fit if I can.

I hope it will work!

Ladies, I bought some cheap wool sweaters, washed and dried them on Hot to felt them then I cut them out. I chose to use Rita's Rump Pocket Diaper pattern. I just cut it a little larger. I looked at the patterns you ladies chose but decided to go with RRP diaper because: I simply wanted some covers that I could change without removing pants and shoes if worn during th day. Your choices mean stripping the child down from the waist. This was just my personal choice but something to think about anyway.

Now I just need to Lanolize them!

Yes, fortunately my babe is only 3 months and it's hot enough that he's never wearing shoes/pants. I'm sure a snap/touchtape cover will be better for cool weather or bigger babies.

It worked! I just used an old crappy sweater to try it out on and it came out great. I will probably make the next one a little bigger, but it seems to be a good basic pattern.

Yes, but then you can use the soaker as an article of clothing. Especially if you embellish it with some wool scraps.

You can also make shorties and longies from wool sweaters. Have you seen the tutorial on making longies from the arms of wool sweaters? Too cute!

Yep, just wash and dry on hot.

Then to lanolinize the butt sweaters, I squeeze out an inch of Lansinoh, put it in the sink with about a gallon or two of warm water, swish around the butt sweater for a minute, then let it sit for 15 minutes. Then I roll it up in a towel to gently squeeze out water, then lay it out to dry.
