a little OT: good place to settle?

I put this here b/c there is no specific tribal place I want to limit it to.

I currently live in St. Louis, MO. I want-no need a change. We want to relocate, but don't have any particular limits on it, though I think I want to stay in the US for now. DH is a nurse, so he has job possibilities practically everywhere. I am doula/mw in training, so I'm not expected to bring down anything consistant. We were thinking about Columbia, MO b/c we have a friend there who is close and who says the community is wonderful, but she might be leaving there and we don't have any real reasons for there aside from the political and social climate. So...

Where should we go?

We are looking for open minded people, but we don't need everything to be super liberal to be comfortable. (We're libertarians actually, more emphasis on personal freedoms than anything else) I'd like it if the town was pretty small so that we could get a homestead that was fairly isolated without being remote. I really love the pacific northwest on account of absolutely needing cloudy and rainy days to survive, but it is really expensive. (We're coming from midwest were $125K has bought us a 2br house with a nice big yard. We can go up in price a little, but not like $500K) Laid back atmosphere, emphasis on green living and grassroots community. Must have waterways and bike trails. A thriving farmer's market and the availability of locally produced food and goods are a must.

I've lived here all my life and although it has a lot of perks and is great for kids, I just want to be somewhere where my dreadlocks to put me into a box as soon as people see me (That doesn't mean I need everybody to have them to feel comfortable though.) And I don't get dizzy from all the terraforming and ticky tacky boxes.
Thanks for your time.

Well, I'd like to know too
Here's the problems I've into....
living here in rural Ca I have 12 acres and fresh, clean air and water and 680 people in town......but I have to drive 20 min for a seasonal farmers market, and 1.5 hours for a real farmer's market - in Redding which isn't year round and can't compare to Chico's or San Luis Obispo's...........We have organic produce delivered out of Redding - they start with local then get it from anywhere.......
Most people are conservative.

San Luis Obispo has like minded people an awesome farmer's market and it's not as pricey as other places in CA - but not as cheap as where I am.....a homestead would be hard because land is at a premium but there are quite a few farms and larger properties......

If you would consider the East Coast, I recommend Chapel Hill/Carrboro, Boone/Blowing Rock, and Asheville, all in North Carolina!

Please consider Lawrence, KS. It sounds EXACTLY like what you're looking for.

Let me know what you think!

Binghamton NY is nice, and we really really need more midwives.... (especially homebirth)

Just a jump down the highway is Columbia, MO! There are many small towns just a 10 min. ride from Columbia (Millersburg, etc.)! (I'm from St. Louis, too.)

Eugene or Salem, Oregon are probably the most affordable nice places in the Pacific Northwest. Both smallish-biggish, with outlying areas, rainy winters, farmers markets and community markets and AP folks. Lots of kids' activities and festivals without the price tag of living in Portland or Seattle to participate in those things.
