a friend of mine uses acrylic for bibs does it even work?

I'm sure you could, but I'd rather use cotton.

LoL . . . I know from experience. The answer is an emphatic "NO"! Acrylic is not absorbent at all. You can use it to make novelty bibs but if you want a functional bib, cotton is really the only way to go.

For some babies, bibs are basically just for looks. Some don't spit up much at all, and some don't drool much. (My kids were like fountains of spitting up, but not much of the drooling.) Some don't do much of either. And a lot of people go for more waterproof stuff for the eating-solids bibs. So I guess if you're making bibs based on "dry" babies , then acrylic would work (although I'd expect the bibs to be less comfortable in acrylic).

I just made one with super cheap Peaches and Cream cotton. It was so soft and sweet. :
