Contesting stuff on your credit report

I sure hope someone knows the answer to this!

We're cleaning up our credit and today my dh contested several items on his credit report that are incorrect. (Like when we sold a car, then the guy who bought it got some parking tickets and didn't pay them, and it ended up on dh's credit report. : ) He got his free report through Experian (sp?) one of the three main credit bureaus. Now, does he have to go to the other two credit bureaus and contest them there as well? Or will they be notified of any correction that needs to be made to his credit?

Nope, you have to contest them all. There are actually 4 credit bureaus, but the last one doesn't matter as much as the big 3. Send them each a letter contesting it, weekly if possible, until it's off and make sure it stays off.

Ugh, how freaking annoying.

But thanks for answering my question!

If you need help with contesting things on your credit report, go to the forums at creditboards.com. There is a lot of information there and it might take a little time to sift through but there are a zillion BTDT stories.

OK, thanks for the tip. I am really hoping this will be a straightforward process!

This isn't answering the question you asked, but ...

A similar thing happened to me a couple of years ago. It turned out that the car's new owner had never properly transferred the title, and the car was still registered in my name. You might want to check on that with your state's department of motor vehicles.

Go to creditboards.com the people are really helpful over there and like the pp said there are a zillion BTDT stories and a lot of great advice. I just had to do this last fall, so I understand, but you'll need to realize that even IF you do get the stuff removed his score has already taken the hit and will take awhile to bounce back. I lost 100pts. because of a screw up at the phone company(they had my old business account all screwed up. Anyway I still am getting my score back up every month, but it's not back to where it was. It won't happen overnight, and even though it has been wiped off and is no longer there my score is affected from the 2 months that it was, it honestly still makes me very angry, and I hate Transunion.
