How big was your birth kit?

I just ordered my birth kit and standard shipping was $11!!! Is this going to be a huge package or something? I can't understand why it would be $11 for shipping.

Hi French- its pinksweetpea (from the nest)

I don't have an answer to your question because my birth kit has not arrived yet, but I just wanted to say hello.

Huh. So is it just the med supplies? If so, mine was about the size of 2 shoe boxes put together, but packed pretty tight. Every midwife is diff tho in what they suggest. In the end, med supplies and all other things took up 5 boxes.

Did you order chux? I got mine from the pharmacy, but they're pretty big..

The shipping on mine was $13 and the kit weighed about 5lbs and was not in a large box. I thought it was steep, but it made it here safe and sound

Mine cost about $12 to ship. I found it rather expensive too.

Well at least I know other people are paying similar amounts. The chux are coming the birth kit. I guess they are big, but I wouldn't think that they're that heavy.

All I know is I mailed a 9lb book at the post office the other day and it was about $10.00 in postage.

I told my MIL, I wonder if they're shipping me a whole hospital!?

I'm not sure about the shipping because I'm not even anywhere near ordering mine yet so I'm not sure. But that does sound expensive to me.

Also, are birth kits generally expensive? My midwife told me of the site I was supposed to order mine at and I looked it up. Their kits ranged from 20 something dollars to forty something. But the kit that my midwife specially puts together is $75!!! That seems like a lot to me. Is this normal?

Kimi- the one my MW put together cost $56, but I also have to buy a bunch of other stuff at the store. Maybe yours just tried to include some of that extra stuff in the kit, so you wouldn't have to purchase it elsewhere?

I just CAN'T WAIT for mine to arrive. I am doing some serious nesting here ladies and want everything all set up and waiting.

Mine cost $9 to ship and I believe it was an $8 flat rate double-shoe-box-sized box (meaning it was a looong box). If the box is longer than 12" your postage goes up regardless of weight. The chux pads take up A TON of room--I only got 3 but folded up tight they took up most of the space!

Now, I am relieved that they aren't charging shipping for my 2 back-ordered items, which will both ALSO be shipped priority, seperately, as they come in. I know they're taking a loss with those and I am thankful.

The kit my former MW put together was $56, but since I'm not seeing her I picked a much smaller selection of stuff (ofc after the 3 tinctures it ended up being $51 still lol, but without them it was only about $20).

If you want to see if it's a reasonable price, go to a place where everything can be customized and added one at a time and see what it totals up to when you do it yourself

My birth kit was in a 2'x2' box. I can understand why it would be that much. I was lucky though. I ordered from a local company and I just went down to pick it up.

I ordered my birth kit from birthwithlove.com and also ordered my birth pool in a box from her as well. My shipping charges came to just over $16.00 for birth kit supplies AND my giant tub. I'm guessing I got a decent deal somehow?? To me $11 for shipping birth supplies (unless it was something really heavy, like the tub for instance) seems like an awful lot of money...

I put together my own birth kit with the individual items that I feel I need and shipping for me is $7.

A flat rate box is now 9.30 and more for the large flat rate. I ship about a dozen packages a week, $11 seems about right to me, esp if they are adding in packaging fees. You can go to usps.com and check their postage fees. I mailed a pfaltzgraff jar the other day and it cost me $18. And that was online fees which are less.

My MW gave me what she supplies and I got a list of what I needed to buy/supply. There was only ONE thing I needed (well, wanted) to order (bought the rest locally) and that was a pool liner. The liner was only $15...the shipping? $8!!! Yikes! (It just arrived and wasn't heavy at all.)

I think the S&H is a lot of times calculated by cost bracket rather than weight. That seems senseless to me, but whaddya do?

Our birth supply list was specifically made so that everything we need you to get is either already in your home (like toilet paper) or is readily avaialble at Walmart (like Chux pads).
