It depends... the ceiling fan in our bedroom barely does a thing, even turned up to it's highest. However, the ceiling fan in the living room is phenomenal. I did a lot of research before buying it. It is specially designed so that the blades are shaped similar to an airplane's propeller blades, so it moves large amounts of air with less energy used... Rather than the typical flat blades which don't move that much air at all. It also has a thermostat on it so that it will automatically turn itself on if it gets sweltering in the house. Even when it's horribly hot here (around here that means mid-90s), sitting under that fan (even on low) is great.

Of course, we can't leave loose papers in the living room, because the fan will blow them around. But, it's a decent trade-off, IMO.
