The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls- could not put it down. Amazing memoir of an unconventional family life with poverty and neglect. It was just so raw.

Goatsong by Frank Yerby- gritty realistic portrayal of life in ancient Greece, the violence, the struggle for power and knowledge, and of course love. This book floored me unlike any other.

The Red Tent by Anita Diamont- a fascinating story of Biblical characters told in a non-religious manner; what was it like to live as a woman then? Their struggles and camaraderie as I could never have imagined it. This book has Goddess power!

These books will rock your world.

My all-time fave is The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy (But don't even associate it with the movie--blech! There is no comparison.)

Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood is up there near the top.

I have others but can't think of them at the moment.

Oh to Kill a Mockingbird is so good. We could do another whole thread of "juvenile literature" or "young adult fiction" I'm sure too. They have some of the best books. I guess I was limiting myself to "adult" books. Anne Lamott rings a bell, I must own something by her or have read something of hers before.... I'm reading some Janet Evanovich right now, but will revisit this thread for new ideas on things to hold at the library.

I have so many...I can't choose three.

But I would have to say "To Kill a Mockingbird" is on my favorites list.

Oooh, To Kill a Mockingbird was so good!

I can't really name a top three, but one I keep meaning to go back to is _Kate Vaiden_ by Reynolds Price. I read it so long ago I don't really remember much - except that Kate Vaiden was my all-time favorite character in a book for a long time.

If I had to pick 3, maybe I'd go with:

A Soldier of the Great War - Mark Helprin
Delta Wedding - Eudora Welty
Sometimes a Great Notion - Ken Kesey

But there are a lot of others I could have picked instead.

I have to add The Secret Life of Bees. I get all misty just thinking about that book.

The Lord of the Rings -Tolkien
The Life of Pi - Yann Martel

I know that's 4, but I couldn't decide which to leave out.

I loved:

Gilead by Marilynne Robinson

Atonement by Ian McEwan

anything by Edwidge Danticat

And the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, for good escapist and addictive fun. It's certainly not "great" literature, though I loved it!
