Green grilling--is this possible?

Is there any way it can be green to grill? I know about using lump charcoal and a charcoal chimney instead of briquettes and lighter fluid, but is it still really wasteful? (Also, we suck at grilling on the lump charcoal! Any tips?)

We don't eat meat, so all we ever grill is veggies, which I find require quite high heat to be good.

What about solar cooking instead of using charcoal or gas?

We just gather sticks up and use them instead of charcoal... works great!!

I just try and make sure not to put any more fuel than I need on the grill, and have all my food ready to go when I get started.

We might have to try that. Although I wouldn't think you'd be able to get a very consistent heat that way. Do you use any lighter fluid to get things going or do you just light the sticks?

We use lump charcoal and these little firestarters instead of fluids for our big Green Egg smoker. I think its wax and cardboard and i have seen other posts where people make them out of egg cardboard cartons and wax. Also I have heard of people using all cotton dryer lint to start fires.

Just think "elevated campfire" A rolled up rope of newspaper lit on one end will light kindling (could be considered kindling, too).
Now, I want to grill- and it's raining :

They make "charcoal" from corn cobs. It is supposed to work great. We still use propane.
