February 08 - 1 Year Ago We Were All Knocked Up!! - Page 9

i've just finished catching up...too sleepy to post little snippets to everyone but i never can remember everything any way, how the heck do you all do it? do you keep a little cheat sheet to write on?

anyhoo, i love reading about everyone's adventures. it's sort of like "days of our lives" but better cause it's real and about babies!

linnaea rolled from front to back today nut it was totally by accident. her head just bobbled over to the side and the momentum pulled the rest of her over. she freaked out and started crying.

i'm going to get an amber teething necklace in the next co-op. i just got a nursing necklace in a co-op and it can't get here too soon! she's taken to grabbing folds of skin (on my floppy boobies) and squeezing, as well as the occasional nipple yank.

she weighs 16-1/2 pounds already, even her fet are fat

oh, sarah! i love milk breath, it's like a little puppy. i remember when lazlo's changed too.

okay, off to figure out my just tomatoes co-op order. seriously they are like half off! and finish up tierra farms.. who doesn't love dried fruits and nuts?

I will admit that, because I get kid-free computer time so infrequently, that I usually just read the last 2 pages. That way I can keep up with what is most recent for everybody. It sucks to not always be caught up with everyone's lives, but at least I don't stop trying completely when the thread gets super long!

Pretty tired today...Molly was up every 2 hours (which is something she really didn't even do as a newborn). It's partly because I am trying to move her to the co-sleeper and out of our bed, but she did the same thing the night before last, and she was in the bed the whole time that night. DH has been getting TERRIBLE sleep with her, so I do hope that she will transition to the co-sleeper, but I can only go with such broken sleep for so long! I guess it's some kind of phase. Anyone have any words of wisdom?

This too will pass? Sorry, just hugs, really. You know she'll grow out of it, it's just a case of staying sane until she does.

Playa, you are the co-op queen! You crack me up! I can't even look, because I know I'll buy things I can't really afford. I'm too weak!

ack! Kaia does this, I can't seem to convince her to stop! I try everything to get her to hold onto something else or my hand, but she just whips her little hands away and clamps back down on my nipple. I've got all sorts of scratches, bruises, and red marks on my nipples and breasts from this, and then "rashy" looking area where she just scratches over and over. It drives me nuts! Anyone have any great advice on deterring this? I just try to hold her hand and tell her "No. That hurts mum." Or make her take a break when she gets a good handful of nipple in her little pointy nails and I need a seconds to close my eyes and breath.

Kaia's not doing too much rolling. I know she can because she randomly has since she was born, but she usually doesn't, except at night. (what an awesome motivator boobs are!)

Kaia has been *loving* the thunderstorms and rain. It's so funny. She goes ballistic the entire time, which can be a very long time! DP and I have been taking turns holding her out on the back porch, because if we get too far away from a good view of the storm she starts crying Our county has had a couple flood warnings but all it has meant for us so far is that the pool overflowed a couple times.

I, too, am with everyone on the WIC. I personally couldn't not tell my DP, but I would certainly tell him in no uncertain terms. He'll get over it far faster than you will get over running out of milk and switching to formula, yes? Hopefully if he understands the choice very well could be WIC for food now or WIC for formula later, you could even have him in agreance

In other news we have some wonderful young cherry trees that will be poisoned by the power-line people if I don't cut them down first! So I made a nice little cherry teether stick for Kaia, just widdled it down, sanded it, and finished it with cocoa butter, plus a little cheater work with the dremel It was fun and now it seems to be her favorite toy. I put ridges on one end and that's what she gums to death. Trying to make another now for the teether we have in our daycare. I'm hoping to use the rest to attempt to build a gnome tree house thing for her. She won't be able to use it for quite some time so maybe I can just take my sweet time and actually finish it, since now is when I have the cherry to use.

Oh, and 2 of Kaia's teeth started to show up a few days ago!She was really upset, made her some fennel-ginger gripe water, which really seems to be helping her, and I think now they've settled back down a bit and not bothering her so much.

Flapjack - Hurray for you! I do hope you can resolve matters in a community way without getting "official". Good luck!

Be careful - I just might do that!

The Occupational Therapist was here a couple of days ago, and I asked her if there was a "trick" to keeping the cannula in. The only things we could think of were using surgical tape to tape it to her face (but we know that she would just rip that off too; in the hospital, she was constantly taking IVs out), or using the "mitts" that they used in the hospital (though she is good at taking those off about 1/2 the time). She said, "There is no trick, you just have to check on her frequently. You're up with the baby at night anyway, aren't you?" HA! This kid goes to sleep at 9pm, and doesn't wake up until 9am, with a quick nursing session sometime in there that I'm usually asleep for.

What's everyone planning for Father's Day? Since my kids' father is no longer in their lives, and my dad and brother have stepped up to fill that position, I'm looking for some ideas about what to get/do with them. (My dad usually gets a Home Depot gift card for every holiday...we tried to be creative with his birthday, but he didn't really go for it. My brother usually gets a Best Buy gift card.) We can't really leave the house, because it's so hard to get Grandma out of the house, and she wouldn't last for an outing.

And in baby-related news...does anyone else's baby like standing up? Blake can't pull up to standing, (he can't even sit up on his own yet!) but if someone gets him in that position and puts his hands on something (the couch, usually), he will happily stand there for 5 or 10 minutes, babbling the whole time. I've already gotten the bowlegged talk from the older family members, but haven't done any research on it.

sure! but before you start co-oping you should know it can be addictive

basically, it is a group of people going in on a group buy of things in return for a large discount. like the tierra farms co-op that is currently running. it's fruits, nuts, trail mixes and granola. it's all organic and peanut-free. so, what happens is everyone places an order of stuff they want, the co-op host totals it and determines how much more we need to fill the cases.

for example, a case of cashew pieces is 25 pounds. if we have people that have ordered 21 pounds we need to purchase 4 more pounds in order to fill the case. so, people usually step up and add to their orders, if it doesn't fill it gets dropped.

then the host orders and divides and mails the orders to all the participants. there is a co-op fee but it's all non-profit so the fee is $2 or less for the hosts ink supplies, boxes, shipping labels etc.

so, in exchange for buying a case we get a great discount. i just checked at trader joe's and whole foods and even adding on $1 per pound for shipping (which is a bit high) i am still saving from $1- $4 per pound. like raw organic cashew pieces are $3.57/pound. at whole foods they were on sale for $6.99/pound.

frontier is a popular co-op too. they have things like burt's bees, dr. bronner's, bulk vanilla beans (40 beans for $20- 1 bean for $9 at whole foods), kiss my face, weleda... all for about half of what you would pay in a grocery store. but double check because some things are more expensive. anyway, frontier has a $250 minimum order and they want it to be in a group of at least 6 people, so someone hosts and all the participants place orders and the host divides the order and it gets shipped to each person.

from the co-op board on here i joined a few yahoo groups (i can give you names if you are interested...) and i've been able to get stainless steel water bottles, foogo sippy cups, wooden teething rattles, kumon work books, a vita-mix, badger balm, handmade soaps, just tomatoes, a nursing necklace, a mei tai.... all for a large discount or wholesale prices.

um, anyway, i'm obviously a little nuts about co-ops any questions just let me know

Thank you Playa Mama :
Jezzy, adding to what Playamama said most co-ops are worth doing even with international shipping. (You're not AFPO, are you?) Some things, like Dr Bronners, I can get cheaper over here than I can with frontier + shipping, but other stuff, like the chico bags, burts bees via frontier, stuff like that, I've made a huge saving on.

After a fashion-- I use the multiquote button. If I see something to which I'd like to respond, I hit multiquote on that post. All of the posts show up when I hit reply, so I don't have to actually remember anything; I can just read over what's already in my reply box.

Awww! Bean was big on playing with the boobs. I think there's nothing more adorable in the world than a toddler driving a little toy car over the boob as he nurses.

I think Bear's around there... but I also suspect that he's about 27" tall. He's a long skinny fellows. After three hobbits, I got a half-elf.

Nursing necklace-- It's a necklace you wear that the kid can fiddle with so that they're not tearing your boobs/shirt/chest/hair to shreds. And, when she's a little older... toy cars!

Not a clue. I should really ask Mike if he has any thoughts.

Bear *can* pull to standing, which is absolutely *astonishing* to me. He just wants to go places, though.

As to bowleggedness... I have pictures of BooBah cruising on her own at this age (she was a very early mover) and today her legs are healthy and strong and lovely. Babies will let you know if they shouldn't be trying to stand by (surprise!!) not trying to stand. Tell your family that you appreciate their concerns, it's wonderful that they care so much about the baby and would they like any beandip?

Bearbuns is SO desperate to crawl. On the temperament scale, Bear falls somewhere between BeanBean and BooBah; He wants to do things by himself and tries, but he needs a little bit of help reorganizing himself when he can't. By contrast, BeanBean would FLIP out and need full-on consolation when he couldn't accomplish a task. BooBah would work on it, and when she was unable she'd start to get worked up. Whenever this happened, she'd stick her thumb in her mouth, calm down, and then she'd pull it out and try again. It was absolutely amazing to watch her-- the Incredible Self-Soothing Baby, we called her. Such a BooBah!

LOL, how about, would you please PASS the beandip?! And the chips!

I didn't think there was much to it, but thank you for telling me about BooBah, because the next time it comes up, I'm going to say, "Well, someone whose child did that doesn't have bowlegs now, so I'll go with that, thankyouverymuch. And make me some damn beandip already!"

You SO have me craving beandip now. :

oh teeny! i hope something does fall into place!! that would stress me out! the breast milk breath is the most heavenly scent on earth! dd and i had yeast but she still had it so i don't know if it would be yeast. you have to get right in there, make sure you're not smelling cheesy neck folds or anything and don't do it too soon after a spit up. my favorite is to stick my nose right up to his mouth when he yawns. i'm serious, i'm a total freak about this milk breath try that and check back in!

yes, it is a real mess! iowa has 54 of 99 couties declared disaster areas and things aren't expected to peak until sunday. i hope you are staying dry! we are in a pretty safe area and our house will be fine but even here, any low areas are just filled with water and the streets are running with water people are pumping out of their basements.

oh yes, james loves to stand!! i've started putting him in his jumper thing and he doesn't bounce he just stands and sometimes tries to walk.

ah yes, the breast grabbing. sometimes my finger will work and other not. but i am lucky, he just grabs the skin and many times i don't even know he's doing it, unless i'm behind on finger nail trimming that is!!

There was a tornado last night in western Iowa and it hit a boy scout camp. 4 young teens dies and 40 people were injured, some seriously. For some reason this really hit me hard and I've been thinking about it all day. How scary that must have been for these boys and as a mother......well I can't type it out. Anyway, I have just been thinking and feeling this all day and felt the need to share, these familes could use more loving thoughts.

we went to a garage sale today and i got some pyrex dishes (i have been searching as we are phasing plastic out of the kitchen) and a vacuum sealer that also does cans, some other such things, I love finding things like that!

Anyway, there is my random post it took a good 30 minutes to write!

Things are rotten here.

I went to my uncle's funeral by myself, with Robin -- a 3 hour drive, our first long trip. The funeral was very sad.

I got a call during services and basically had to turn around, go to the hotel, pack, and drive back to Iowa City. The flooding is getting really bad. We live near the river, but up high. The road to our house is in the process of closing. I got there and Brian was gone -- he had already left. I checked my cell and he had left dozens of messages with me not knowing (crappy service!!). He was sure we were dead. We're in a hotel now but we had to leave the cats at home for the time being. PLEASE PRAY that we can get back into our house soon. This is DISASTROUS AND HORRIBLE.

Oh, smokeylo, I'm so sorry. Is there *anything* we can do for you or send you that might help? Your poor dh must have been absolutely terrified when he couldn't reach you. I'm thinking of you and your family. *HUGE hugs*

sarah, I saw about that tornado on the news last night. How terrible. My oldest ds is 13, and yeah...thinking about how scared those boys must have been hurts my heart.

Umm, do I have the only average babe in our ddc? The boy ain't standing, talking, crawling, or doing much of anything but batting at toys!

Love to all, sorry I can't reply to everyone individually - I've got to go get things ready - we're having friends over in the morning.

Keeping you in my mind. I have friends IRL in IA that send me updates, I know it must be scary cuz some of the rivers are overtopping dams, levies and even bridges! Praying that the rains will stop soon for all of you water-logged mamas. I'm a midwesterner by birth and miss the thunderstorms, but not the humidity. But I grew up in a river town and know how scary that is, the flooding, the tornados and stuff.

Ah! The multi-quote button.... I never understood that, thanks everyone. I'll have to acquaint myself with it, but not today.

The questions about the teething necklace, yes it does sometimes leave red marks from the little round stones, but I think that is normal and not painful. DD doesn't pull at it and I think her little neck is so chubby that it is cushioned well enough as well as the reason for the red marks. And I put it out in the sun cuz there is a belief that placing stones, crystals, etc out in the sun can purify them of 'energies' picked up from other people as well as energize them. It's kinda like a bath and meal all at once for the stones. For some people that might be a little too out there.... but its all good.

She has been wearing the necklace for 2 full days and I think there maybe less drool, but it's not significant. I want to give it a week to really kick in. She is chewing more on things, like maybe its not so painful to chew. She has been sticking my fingers in her mouth whenever I hold her, I tell her she can bite hard.... once she gets teeth that'll change.

Helen, I've never heard of the hazelwood remedy, but would be interested to know more.

Teeny: And the sweet baby's breath smell.... I was worried that when we stopped BF that I would never get to smell that again. But she still has it. I love it . I am wondering if the reason why she still has it is because we have been giving her probiotics since we started on formula? So I wanted to ask if you are getting probiotics in your own diet? Yogurt, kefir, etc? My understanding is that it needs to be in your diet to be passed on to your DC. You could also add probiotics to a bottle of EBM, or dab some on your nipple before nursing. If you are having thrush, isn't that basically the same as a yeast infection? A bacterial imbalance? One of the remedies for that is yogurt and probiotics. I use Baby Jarro-dolphilus.

Nope, Nellah is pretty average except for the constant desire to stand -- she has no interest in turning, pulling, crawling etc. I found myself trying to coax her to roll over the other day and had to stop and realize that it will all happen soon enough and there is no need to rush that crazy train -- not with a three year old to run after!

I second the bean dip strategy, but keep in mind that all babies/kids are naturally bowlegged until they're three (ish) or until their bones are better developed and they're walking a lot. Also as our midwife told us -- babies won't do anything that 'hurts' so if it doesn't feel good, they won't do it. I had an 'older' lady (80's, never married) tell me that Jack would be bowlegged if we kept letting him stand before he was ready I just said "oh yeah" and moved on.

So, I've finally made the switch.

Not to cloth diapers, but biodegradable gdiapers. Anyone else using these. My biggest issue with cloth has been the washing (I HATE doing laundry and mange to only have to do it once a week, the thought of every day, or every other for cloth diapers was enough to send me back to sposies) But these rock!

Anyhoo, we're off to my dad's this weekend then to Toronto for my graduation on Monday and then I'll have my IL's here all next week (hopefully that'll be OK, they're pretty good).

Anyone else's LO ... not so 'babyish' anymore??? Nellah seems to have changed so much in the last week -- really alert and laughing, reacting and just so much more like a little girl than a baby.
DAnielle, just please don't flush them? I know it claims they're flushable, but the less crap going into our waterways the better.
Operamommy, River is wonderfully average too (except that I keep thinking of it as slow, then telling myself off.) He's not big on toys, though, probably because his squint still isn't going anywhere and I don't honestly know how good or bad his eyesight is. It seems like his hand-eye coordination is a little behind. I reckon he's going to be in glasses by the time he's two
Smokeylo, I'll keep praying that you and your family stay safe. We got caught in the floods over here last summer, and it was pretty scary. Swindon's on the top of a hill so we were safe, but couldn't go anywhere, and the news coverage was horrendous.

smokeylo, I hope you and your family are safe. I will be thinking about you guys!

Anyone elses baby getting REALLY interested in food? Ash is starting to open her mouth like a little bird when I am eating or drinking. (she even grabbed my spoon while I was eating joghurt!) When I am drinking water I will give her a little sip she loves it but can't swollow the water most of it comes back out. I don't think that this can harm her she is just practicing. She thinks it is the greatest though!

Wow eilonwy pulling himself to a stand! that is astonishing!
