Most dealers are refusing to take SUVs as trade-in because NOBODY will buy them!! Ya HOOOOOO!!!

Just one more reason to be grateful that gas prices are going up

yes because even if you drive a car gas prices aren't affecting most people, right? Are buses running on water now also? What about people who are now wanting to trade in their SUV for a better vehicle, now they can't and are still consuming large amounts of gas so your celebration seems a bit silly to me. If you want SUv's off the road so bad it would be a great thing that more people are trying to get rid of them and getting a better vehicle.

Great. We both drove compact cars until this fall when they both died (both had insane miles on them). When that happened my father bought us a used SUV (two weeks before he died). Now it's our only car, and we can't afford to fill it up. We wanted to trade it in this month when we move. Now what do we do? How is DH going to get to work? WTF do we do?

Yes, it's great that folks don't want to purchase SUVs anymore. I get what you're saying. It's a mentality shift forced on folks because of gas prices.

If everyone traded in their SUVs, unless they were fully recycled, we'd have a crap load of junk to deal with. Better to find ways to run cars on renewable energy.

No need to be overly sensitive folks. I think we can all agree gas-guzzling vehicles are not the best for the Earth. I'd much rather a gas-guzzling bus than a 2 passenger SUV. If that's all you have right now, well, that's what you have and it's awful. I pray the crunch will let up soon. I pray even more so that folks will *remember* when things get better, if they do, why not to buy a gas-guzzler.

And Alpine Mama, . You didn't buy your car. It's clear if you had, you would have made a different choice. I'm so sorry things are so hard now and I really hope you can find someone who will take the car as a trade-in.

there are a few SUVs that are not such gas guzzlers though and for some ppl w/ 4 or more kids, its either an SUV or a minivan. since i didnt want a minivan, we had to get an SUV but we are getting good gas mileage out of ours, considering the alternatives.

These types of threads are sensitive issues for people already struggling to cover their bills included gas. I don't just mean SUV drivers, people with regular cars are having a hard time too. The rise in gas prices are affecting some people more than others and it's not limited to SUV drivers. Plus I don't see anyone being "overly" sensitive just stating their own opinion on the subject.

That is really interesting! I just read a newspaper article (here in AU) that said despite petrol prices and their environmental impact, there is a SIX MONTH waiting list to purchase some new SUV models here!

I think most people are feeling the difficulty of increased gas prices. If not directly through your car, indirectly. OP was just expressing herself, not minimizing people's difficulty or anything like that and your previous post in the thread was condemning her exuberance at what she felt was a good thing.

I don't think our dealers have stopped taking them at all, but you're really not going to get a lot for a trade in. And it was HILARIOUS to watch the sales guys try to talk me into one when I went in to test drive a replacement for our family car. They were doing everything short of breaking into a coordinated dance routine to try to get me interested in one. It was absurd.

On the other hand, what I really wanted was a 2000-2005 Civic with highish miles and good maintenence records. Which cannot be had for love or money in our current market. Looking at the For Sale ads you'd think Honda Motors just closed up shop between 1995 and 2005 becuase there is NOTHING out there. People who have those cars are hanging on to them and if they don't, they're selling like hot cakes and comanding a premium price.

Actually celebrating how great it is that prices are getting out of control is minimizing people's difficulties. So my condemning her exuberance is the same as condemning people's real life struggles with this issue.
At the same time OP I respect although disagree with your stance on the subject and hope you do not see this as an attack on your person just a difference in the view of it.

I just want to clear up one thing ... :

I am not minimizing people's difficulties with gas prices going up, just not addressing it in the original post. The complexities of the situation are overwhelming, I was just pointing out one tiny little aspect that I see as going in a positive direction.

The part of me that balances the check book cries every time I see the prices go up and have to figure out what we are not going to buy this week or how I am going to drive one less mile so I can still afford milk. Please don't assume that it's not causing me difficulties too. It's the "green living" part of me that can see a little good in the gas prices going up and the fact that people are starting to pay attention to how much gas they use.

I sometimes get tired of complaining about the way things are right now, I do that enough!!

See this is where I have a problem, not with you just the situation. Dh decided at the last minute to go back to school, I mean very last minute so last minute that he didn't get all the class choices he wanted. So now he has a class in the morning and a class in the evening in addition to online classes. That's four trips in one day three times a week. We don't even live on a bus route. Then where I work at (very very part time) has moved to a new community center for the summer which is further than where I was before. Which means driving just a bit further three times a week also, it's not in walking or biking distance plus I take all the kids to work with me. I can't think of anything to do to change those things or cut back on. Plus Dh has weekly Dr.'s appointments. I have nothing to cut back on. We've pretty much stopped going to the Y, reduced summer activities. I feel like I have nothing else to cut back on to decrease our gas milage. We're looking at getting a more fuel efficient vehicle but we can't get a car, too many kids, lol. Oh well, that's why the situation is just.....frustrating. I will probably stop working soon also to eliminate that. I didn't mind when it was closer, it was a cool job but now it's getting not worth it.

I agree . . . Jeca, I wasn't trying to minimalize things either. It's just that this is the green living forum and from a green perspective, it's good that folks who would otherwise could not care less are paying attention.

Not to make light of the issue but no way would DH be driving 2 round trips to campus 3x weeks. Either stay all day, or drop a class. Fuel is very expensive compare to a year ago, we all need to plan driving better, even if that means DH has to drop a class or register earlier next time.

you said you cant get a 'car' because of the # of kids... i dont see any listed in your siggie but DH has a camry and can get 4 kids with him 3 in the back and my oldest in the front. So unless you have more then 4 kids a sedan is do-able, not perfect but do-able many many sedans also have the option to turn off the passengar air bag.

There is no way I would want him to stay there all day. One class ends at 1115 and the next class doesn't start until 500, what would he do there all day? Then campus is not far just not in walking distance.
On the car things does that mean they never go anywhere all together? I'm not ok with that, never being able to do anything as a family.
On dropping a class I agree with that and have been pressing the issue. I think it's silly to have such a long split he should have registered earlier, I'm still working on that. He says it will throw him off course but he needs to suck it up. The only thing I can say is his car is an old escort that gets pretty great gas milage.

well from 1115-5 he could do school work, surely they have a library or computer lab. He could work on his on-line class info as well. Can he pick up another class or independent study?
NO we dont go anywhere as a family most times either. On the rare occassion that we do, we travel in 2 cars. Which in the long run is less expensive then buying a huge vehicle we all can fit in.

Sometimes in the face of finances convenience takes a back seat to $$
