Hawaii rocks...

I just got back from Waikiki where I was nursing my LO everywhere without a bad look from anyone! In restaurants, walking down the street, on the beach, at the airport...I got lots of smiles. At the airport, my poor babe was screaming by the time we got him out of the car and the security guard there told me to "hurry up and breastfeed him".

I see so many depressing stories on MDC about NIP in the States so I wanted to share my positive experiences.

Yay, so glad to hear this! In October I'm going to Hawaii on this crazy family vacation that my in-laws organized and my kiddo will only be three months old. At least NIP will be one less thing to worry about.

Where in HI will you be?

I know a gal living there and she says it is FAB for nursing momma's!

In Hawaii, you can be fined if you tell a NIP mother that she can't NIP! One of a very few states where that is the case.

Yeah you see so much more flesh on the beaches that BF does not seem all that shocking. I love Hawaii! I can't wait to go back there again and bring my DH and DD.

I actually don't know that many details. I think Honolulu for a couple of days, the big island for a few days, and a few days in Kauai. Every time I try to get information from my MIL, she's incredibly vague, even though she's been researching and booking this trip for months: "What town are we staying in on Kauai?" "Oh, I don't know. Wherever the hotel is." And yet she keeps talking about how every day has two carefully planned itineraries-- one for me, DH, and the baby, and one for everyone else. Hopefully someday I'll be allowed to see this itinerary and maybe even have some input into what I'm scheduled to do on a given day.

A couple of months back I saw a mom standing and nursing her baby (who was bigger than a newborn). The really neat thing about it was that this was at a bust outlet mall and she was in front of a busy store without a blanket, wearing a strapless dress with one side pulled down and her partner was holding the stroller.
I actually have never had a problem NIP and I've done it in most of the US.
I've also seen a lot of babywearing here in HI.This state is great for kids.

I think it was in--believe it or not--Breastfeeding for Dummies or The Idiot's Guide to Breastfeeding. One of those books has a chapter on breastfeeding laws.

I actually really hate visiting states where breastfeeding isn't specifically protected. I carry a copy of all the state laws with me at all times, just in case. I've been breastfeeding and NIP (mostly in Georgia) for 27 months with nary a frown in my direction.

Tee hee! So, according to the above link, it's legal in CA to not allow someone to breastfeed in your house. I just emailed my state senator that this law needs to be edited so that you can also not allow someone to formula feed a baby in your house.

I don't actually believe that, but it illustrates the idiocy of that law.

I live on the Big Island and have found a lot of support here for breastfeeding. I have never had a negative comment, and infact a couple of times people have given up a seat for me to bf my ds. There are also quite a few mommy's groups with mom's that have/are doing extended bfing which is great because there is a lot of support and people to help you through it.

Also, as a pp said, I have also noticed a lot of baby wearing here. It is pretty great here.

Just to add a great story about Hawaii. Just yesterday I was out with my dh and ds. We had lunch in the mall and later on were walking through the grocery store when a random lady came up to me and said, "I saw you bfing your baby in the mall earlier and I just wanted to tell you I thought it was so great to see you bfing in public like that."

I thought that was pretty cool.
