Are any of you TV-free simply because watching TV doesn't interest you, LOL? I have always been annoyed by the TV. The raucous action sequences, the advertisements, the loud music and sounds. Heck, I feel violated when someone's profile song starts playing unexpectedly on Myspace. I can't stand the endless flipping of channels, the trance-like state...I just don't like watching TV. DS watches one cartoon in the morning while he eats breakfast but we leave the TV off for the rest of the day (until DB gets home).

This is a big part of why I don't watch... and I find that the longer I go without watching television, the less able I am to handle it when it's on -- all the crazy edits, stupid news graphics and sound effects (and the news crawl at the bottom of the screen), the insane psychedelic commercials... all the totally invasive blathering on and on about pointlessness...

I have watched a lot of TV in my life but cut way back about 10 years ago. At first I watched one show a week but when ds was born 7 years ago I stopped watching all shows. And now, when I am alone at home (which is rare) I have almost no interest in TV. The commercials drive me nuts- I find them very intrusive- and the shows themselves don't hold my interest. Even the PBS shows I used to love - Jeeves and Wooster / Upstairs Downstairs - no longer have the same charm to me. As for the modern shows- I feel like the reality shows are invading people's lives (and I really don't care about those people) and the other shows are very jerky with their 6 second visual bytes- especially the kids shows. When ds and I fly in a plane with the little screens in front of us I put on the Food Channel with no sound- sad to say that I find that to be entertaining. Usually I am reading/talking to ds the whole time any way so the cooking shows are easy to follow and the lack of sound is perfect.

I agree! My distaste for it has grown so much since we went tv free-must be three or four years ago. At first, I craved it. I still watched at friends' or family's homes. Now, it really bothers me. Physically, I can't stand the constantly changing volume with the commercials, or the way it makes me want things..etc etc.
I went over to some friends' home the other night and the tv was on- MTV and some really bad reality show. It took me all of five minutes to gather up the courage to ask them to turn it off. We were there to hang out!
It makes me wonder about the physiological changes that occur when you cut it out of your daily routine.
We watch DVDs on occasion, and some times I just can't stand the sound of it. I let DH watch and I head to the bedroom to read.

I weaned myself off TV shortly after my university studies finished, and have never looked back. Basically my two brothers were hogging the two TVs at home, and I had neither the strength or willpower to convince them to let me watch news or a documentary show, and the path of least resistance, well you guessed it, NO TV...
And now DH and I have very little tolerance for the inane commercials, even on the radio! When I go visit my folks, a good 600 km away, their wide-screen HD TV goes on mute whenever commercials come on. We watch educational documentaries or stuff on Home & Garden TV, TLC and Discovery Channel. All the other stuff, I don't really care anymore that my knowledge of current pop culture is non-existent

Yes! I hate the noise, the barrage of images and advertising, the constant variation in volume, flipping channels, etc. It all just bugs me. I will sometimes put on music in the background, but I can't stand radio with commercials and talking either. Even aside from the other reasons for not wanting the TV on, the general intrusion into my life is plenty. We are TV-free here; we have a TV in an upstairs bedroom that is rarely used. We don't get cable (though sometimes it would be nice to have stuff like the Discovery or History channels), and there aren't any shows we watch at all. In theory, we could turn on the TV to watch our college's football games or to catch news (like election progress), but in reality, we tend to do that via the internet instead. We very occasionally watch movies (like every couple of months), but even if there was a show we wanted to see, we like it much better on DVD because there are no commercials.

I used to LOVE TV. Well, it is not that I necessarily loved it, I was just addicted to it. It didn't make me feel good, though. It made me feel more depressed but I just kept watching it. Now that we have been without a TV for almost 2 years, it really bugs me. When we go to people's houses and the TV is on, I find it obnoxious and I wish they would just turn it off. I am the same with most types of music, too. Too much noise! It is so nice to just walk into a house where there is no background noise.
