Labor?

I've been contracting in periods of 3-5 min at 1min duration or 5-7 at longer since 6am. The midwife wants me to come in and get checked, so we're taking our stuff and the carseat, and heading out!

Wow!

Oh, and funny enough... one of the nurses had a dream last night that I went into labor and had a boy. She was so shocked to come in this morning and hear that I'm in labor.

It's early labor, no mistaking. However, they did a VE to see how far I've gotten in my 9 hours of laboring so far, and it doesn't look good. I was in excruciating pain through the whole exam, and all she was doing was putting one finger in. Turns out, I'm about 50% effaced, but my cervix is closed up tight and my urethra is incredibly swollen. It's swollen so badly that I was screaming during the exam.

The MW isn't happy with the situation at all, and told me I need to go home, relax, and rest. I'm so discouraged.

Go home, rest, and relax. Drink some wine. Get in a hot bath. Have DH massage your back, neck, and shoulders (and feet!). Then try to sleep.

Believe me....you do NOT want to go into active labor exhausted. If this is it then nothing you do is going to stop it. If it's not, then get your rest.

Did she say WHY you're so swollen? Do you have a UTI that needs some attention?

I'm due in August but have become completely wrapped up in the remaining May mommy's impending labor. Hey - it passes the time!

Anyway, have you considered taking some motherwort? It's a pretty amazing herb that will "reset" your body (taking care of prodromal labor) and help you to relax and bring on the real thing. Good luck to you!

No, they have no idea why I'm so swollen. I guess that's what's most discouraging.

Did they check your urine? Make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Plenty! Dehydration can make normal contractions seem killer. That happened to me last time and it's no fun. I labored hard all day long and was sure I was in transition when we got to L & D. It was baby number five and my fourth natural birth-the nurses didn't waste any time getting me to a room.......I was looking like I could deliver any time..............I was 2 cm.

Keeping fingers crossed for you. Keep us updated (if you can) ; )

my urethra gets very swollen in labor too. very painful! try being in your bathtub as much as you can stand. Helps both problems (labor pains and urethra).

Ok, change of plans. I called back to find out what I could do to stop the swelling and she said she just called in a script for Cephalexin. We're going to treat it like a UTI for the next 48 hours (if I have that long left to labor). She told me to hope I have a nice long labor because then the antibiotics will have time to kick in and reduce the swelling. She thinks if we get the swelling down, I'll dilate nice and steady. My body's apparently doing the work, but she thinks the swelling of my urethra is just preventing my cervix from dilating properly.

Pray that this works.

I've seen your posts on alegna's thread, and also your pic on the no-pooing thread, you're so cute! I'm praying and hoping labour gets better for you.

Thinking of you and hoping things smooth out!

Oh Sara, I am so sorry. I know what you mean about working your butt off and not feeling like anything came of it. I made DH check me last night because I was shaking and nauseated and worried I was in transition and he said he feels a hole, but that is about it. I imagine that means 1cm or less.

Aww Sara, I hope the antibiotics kick in and start reducing the swelling soon so labor can really get going. Try and get as much rest as possible now. Your body knows what it is doing and getting things started in the way that is right for you. and ELV's coming your way :
