any simple scarf patterns that you know of? I've tried and get frustrated with it and end up frogging.

I am just finishing my first lace project - a scarf of Feather and Fan from Knitpicks - don't be discouraged by the look of the site, it is a free PDF download, toward the bottom of the page.
Very simple -
Row 1 Knit
Row 2 Purl
Row 3 lace pattern of YO and knit 2 together
Row 4 Knit

And it is just lovely. Knitpicks also gives you directions for using it as a throw or a shawl, too.
