No Poo for preschoolers and babies?

How young can you start the no Poo?
I find that my kids don't really need soap on their head. I just do water. If it's really dirty, I scrub more, or maybe use a tiny bit of baby shampoo, but really it's not frequent.

I'd say with the normal no-poo (baking soda and ACV), I'd start as soon as you could guarantee your kid didn't look down when you're pouring the acv, so it doesn't get in their eyes.

Really, though, they don't seem to need it. At least my kids don't.

yeah, i rarely use soap on my kids, maybe once a week, sometimes less. and i use Dr. Bronner's, which i consider no 'poo since it doesn't have any of the crud that's in shampoo (even commercial baby shampoo/soap). and now that DD1's hair is getting longer i will sometimes put a little coconut or jojoba oil in her hair as a leave-in as well.

My 2 year old gets no-poo'ed with BS-- we have hard water and ACV just makes our hair greasy. Anyway, she closes her eyes when asked and says it tastes salty when it gets in her mouth.
Baby-on-the-way will have no commercial shampoo crap on his or her head! Wish I would have known about it before dd came.

Does anyone know if you can use a shampoo bar without acv? We have all boys and I love our JR Liggett shampoo bars and would like to use it on them, but don't know if we need the acv or not since their hair is pretty short. We use California Baby wash on their hair now.

I've only used Dr Bronner's baby aloe on his hair and the rest of him.......it's castile soap....

I only wash my girls' (6 and 4) hair once a week so when I went no-poo I decided to do it with them too...it works well for their age.

Both my children are no poo. I switched when they were 2 and 4 and it was fine. We did baking soda and ACV until last fall, when we switched to a shampoo bar. Works great.

find i don't need shampoo that much with my youngest,he's almost 2, maybe every 2 weeks or so, water works just fine

my oldest cured me of "needing" to shampoo baby & children's hair. She is 3 and I've washed her hair less than a dozen times in her life. Her first instinct in ANY situation is sheer, hysterical panic. I don't need to subject us to that experience because of society's notion of everyone needing to be scrubbed clean from head to toe daily. Rinsing works very well. A good brushing does wonders. DD2 has had her hair "washed" once (and she's 1) and that was only because the soap i was using on her neck got up on the back of her head.

Yeah, you can skip that step for very short hair. I know that the first inch or so of my head is fine when I forget (or run out of) vinegar, but the ends get kind of dry and poorly textured without it.

I only use shampoo on DS about once a week; the rest of the time he washes with plain water. I haven't yet tried using BS on him.

Thanks! And what is acv? And why is shampoo bad, even the brands like California Baby, Weleda and the like? Because of the plastic packaging, or the shampoo itself?

ACV is apple cider vinegar

Shampoos, even the "natural" ons, often contain SLS

Both Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and its close relative Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are commonly used in many soaps, shampoos, detergents, toothpastes and other products that we expect to "foam up". Both chemicals are very effective foaming agents, chemically known as surfactants.

SLS can irritate, but more importantly it is absorbed through the skin. It can cause other stuff to have easier access to the sensituive layers of skin and mimics the hormone Oestrogen, which may cause a range of problems (more in the link).

Both of my girls are no-pooed and both look dynamite!

I probably only wash my kids hair with shampoo once every 7-10 days- it's never oily, and it seems healthier when it's not washed as often.
