Clothes for DC to wear right after birth?

What kind of outfit did/do you have ready for your DC to wear right after the birth?

I know that at hospitals they normally just do a shirt, a diaper, and then swaddle them. Is this what you're doing? Or are you actually putting "clothes" on the baby right away (after skin-to-skin time of course)

I have some side snap shirts...I was thinking that might be easier than onesies at first. Now I'm debating about getting some pants too....--so much to decide!

Probably diaper, and shirt. The biggest thing in my thinking is that the tee will help keep baby warm durring diaper changes. Then whatever the weather maby sleepers after the first few days.

I put both my babes in one of those gowns that have the fold over mittens on the sleeves. That way they didn't scratch themselves and it was really easy to get to the diaper. Those are really great. Otherwise, since we co-slept, I usually just put them in a onesy to avoid over-heating them.

We put a gown on him and snuggled him up tight in a blanket. Of course it was December and we birthed in a freestanding birth center, but yeah. Lots of skin-to-skin, cuddling in bed, and then my parents got him dressed while I got up to pee. I think I'll probably do the same next time (which will be a homebirth).

Last time I think we just had blankets and a diaper for awhile, then maybe a gown after a day or so.

Diaper and a side snap shirt. Easy and works great.

probably just a diaper here since it'll be July with no a/c.

I'm gonna put the babe in a gown & a nappy, I think. I haven't really imagined past skin to skin!

Shirt and a nappy for the first day or two, then gown. We'll probably swaddle too.

We have central a/c, so will probably dress her in one of those sleepers without legs that cover the hands. If she is hot, then we will put her in a onsie.

That is what is great about being at home- as long as you have everything washed, you can always change your mind!

I talked to my MW about this today, so I guess now I'll answer my own post.

She wants me to have one of those gowns that are elasticized at the bottom (and they often have the sleeves that cover up their hands), because it keeps the baby warm and its easy to check the stump/diaper often in the beginning.

She also said to have some good, thick socks since their feet are the last thing to warm up. Oh, and that we should have a little t-shirt around to go under the gown, in case the house happens to be extra cool or the babe is having problems keeping up her body temp.

{april, hey! i tried to PM you but it says you don't get PMs. (??) I saw the GBCN and I just wanted to say I was sad A lot of us stood up for you though. I really want to hear your birth story and see some pics, so make sure you find me around once your DD arrives --frenchy}

I have this http://www.underthenile.com/underthe...etailBR120.htm and the matching hat for the first outfit. I really like organic gowns for after birth & I like the kimono side snaps.

This will be my first ever summer baby (all my others were winter in the midwest births). So, I'm not 100% that we'll even dress the baby. Skin to skin for about 3 months sounds good to me right now.

We love those side snapping shirts. It's pretty much all our kids wear in the beginning. Dh calls them napoleon shirts.

I wanted to keep him naked, but he went on a bit of a pooping spree. So he ended up in a diaper and one of those zip-up-the-front "baby bags". We birthed in December and it was chilly.

i have just kept her in a nappy, on my chest with a blanket over her, or in the sling. we havent had any trouble with her maintaining heat.

Thanks Frenchy! I went through a sort of withdraw the first couple of days, but overall am glad that I decided to remove myself from that mess. It was a lesson for me because although most of the folks I have met in person have been really supportive about natural and homebirth, I realized that some women really feel quite threatened and angry by my choices.

No matter how you phrase it, they will always think that I am either crazy/ preachy/ etc. Of course, I guess I could have held my tongue when women posted in ignorance, but that is just not in my nature.

I am going to post my story on here and on my blog: babylily.wordpress.com/

I am glad you are here too- I can't wait to hear your story!

I like the tees and the gowns (depends on how hot/cold it is) especially because you'll be changing diapers so often. I add a blanket if I feel like it's needed and baby is good to go

My midwife gives all her babies a little onesie that says “born at home” and has a little house graphic. It was so cute. Then we swaddled DS and snuggled into bed.

I'm not sure what I'm going to pick but I'm going to pick something. (I know that statement didn't quite make sense)

The whole "pregnancy" thing was really unexpected & I've been going through a lot of (what I think are natural, healthy-not bad) emotions about it and how everything is going to change.

It sounds stupid, but one of the most calming things that has helped me feel like the whole process is "real" is baby clothes. I've bought a lot of them, mostly second hand. I've bought boy clothes and girl clothes & unisex clothes and sleepers and just all kinds of clothes, I figure whatever sex I don't have i'll put away in storage and maybe in a few years I'll need to bring them out

I've put some thought into what clothes i'll put them in first, and while its not something I really care too aweful much about, I'm sincerely enjoying thinking about it as I go through my piles of clothes. Its like the one thing that allows me to visualize the baby as something real.

I'm thinking about sewing one of those old fationed "dress" looking things out of some unbleached cotton using a pattern I have in a book printed in the early 1900's that is an old fationed "what to expet when your expecting" type book on pregnancy & infants.

the first probably 6-8 hours DD2 was nakey, with a receiving blanket over the parts of her that weren't snuggled up to me. after that she passed her first meconium (all over the receiving blanket), i wiped her down a bit, put her in a cloth diaper, and an infant gown.
