keeping the placenta

Has anyone kept their placenta after a hosptial birth? Did the staff give you any trouble about wanting to keep it, or was it no big deal?

My friend had a hospital birth last Thursday and I know she brought her placenta home. I didn't hear that there were any problems.

We kept ours, but the hospital where I birthed is the only one in our area that has CNMs, so they were sort of used to the request....no big deal. One of the nurses in L&D even helped my doula pack it up. Other hospitals in our area require that you sign a request form or release. It's best to ask ahead of time what the policy is and put it in your birth plan. You won't want to have to worry about it after the baby is born.
