We get the every summer- none so far- but I make a sugar water solution, put it in a small glass cup, cover the cup with plastic wrap and poke tiny holes in it. The flies get in, some drown, but they can't get out.

We have a ton of fruit flies in our house...intentionally....My BF keeps poison dart frogs, and the fruit flies are what they eat. Ours are wingless mutant flies, but they still get all over the place. One of the best solutions I have is to set up a small bowl with water, vinegar and a little bit of dish soap. They're attracted to the vinegar and then the dish soap keeps them from flying or crawling away and they drown.

What happens when none of the traps work? Our house is totally infested right now and it's, ahem, *bugging* me.

I have done the wine trap, the wine in a bowl/saran wrap with holes, soap and vinegar. We have cleaned the house really well, but the are most heavily concentrated in our bathroom.

ARG. I am really a natural home gal, but if there was a bug bomb I could set up and leave to get these buggers I totally would do it.

I don't even cover my wine with saran wrap. I just sit a cup of white wine out - make sure the wine is to the top of the rim - and by the next day, I have a tone of fruit flies floating it in.

We get tons caught in the traps, but it's not diminishing the infestation...

We had a lady bug infestation one time and I talked to a pest control person who said flying bugs are nearly impossible to get rid of. We only got rid of ours when we went out of town and turned the heat off. The house got super cold and they died off. But, it was hell for the months through spring and summer.

Great, I feel very encouraged.

What is their food source? Why are they staying? What are they hovering around most?

When you figure that out, maybe you'll have an answer on how to get rid of them?

I don't know much about fruit flies, except they like fruit and sweet things.

I had tons of fruit flies living in my houseplants. My mom told me to cover the dirt with 1/2-1 inch of sand. Then the flies can't lay eggs in the dirt. I took all my plants outside and did it and it worked almost instantly! We still have a few flies 3 days later but it cut them by 95%!

If they are in your bathroom they may be enjoying the water in the pipes of the sink/tub, you might try keeping the drain closed up when not in use-same for garbage disposals. You might try some baking soda and then vinegar before you close up the drain, that way it'll be clean and they won't be able to survive.

DH - I checked the kids rooms and didn't find anything

DH *meant to say* I didn't find any rotting apples under the beds. I didn't even look to see if there was a trash can there....

Out oldest two are at their fathers for a couple weeks and so after DH told me there wasn't anything in the kids rooms I hadn't gone in there for a couple days. DS1 had a trash can that was a breeding zone.

We also flushed out the drains with hot water (and a little bleach, ssshhh.) and turned the ac down a bit for a couple days. They got all sluggish in the cooler air.

We are down to just a couple flies here and there. Yay!
