I've been hunting through the search feature here, and google and have found a few decent articles, but I would really love to find some that go through all the different likely interventions at a hospital birth (and how likely those interventions are to happen would be icing on the cake) and all the risks and dangers of those interventions.

I've found some lovely articles online but I would really love to find something clear and detailed, with sources as well.

My husband thinks that home birthing and hospital birthing would be just about the same thing and since we have insurance for a hospital birth (nevermind the $1200-$2000 co-pays ) that we should really use Kaiser.

I'd really like to get him on my side of things, and perhaps if he sees the potential dangers in hospital births of unnecessary interventions then he would understand better that they are WAY different.

Have you read "Pushed". That ought to do it. Also have you watched the Buisness of being born, that will do it too!

I was going to say the same thing.. Read Pushed by Jennifer Block. It's crazy.

Also check out Henci Goer's "Thinking woman's guide to better birth" If you look at the citation alone, you'll get lots.

Doh! I have the book by Henci Goer but haven't cracked it open yet! Thanks I'll look into Pushed as well. I was hoping to find something short and sweet, I know my husband won't sit through a whole book (but I can also find selections too). I have the business of being born up on my computer right now, I've already seen it, and I'm asking him to watch it, but will have to see he's sooo squeamish about blood.

definetly read this book. It may be long, but you can highlight certain sections for him if you'd like. You can get it at amazon for like $12 and change. Check it out mama--he will definetly see things your way after a few minutes of this bood

There are some articles on hencigoer.com, too, that might be short and sweet enough for your dh, but definitely read the book, too.

Read Giving Birth: A journey into the World of Mothers and Midwives. It covers hospital births and interventions. It is loaded with facts! I loved it and I think if most women took the time to read it, they would seriously consider a home birth. You can read reviews here. I also used this book to quote facts to DH and he was interested.

It is a long book but there were just a few short paragraphs that talked about the whole snowballing effect of interventions that really grasped me and slapped me across the head lol. You could always just bookmark a few pages for your DH.

Here is a good article on "Birth Myths," that includes the myth that a hospital is the safest place to give birth:

I loved Ina Mae's Guide to Childbirth by Ina Mae Gaskin- It was the only thing I insisted my husband and sister read before the birth. The first part is all birth stories which I'm pretty sure my husband skipped (but which I was absolutely fascinated by, of course). So the second half is the relevant part and it is relatively short. It doesn't so much emphasize the dangers of hospital birth as it does describe the advantages of non-hospital birth, although all the information you would be looking for is certainly included. I appreciated the positive viewpoint, the useful tips for me and my helpers and the extremely comprehensive and impressive compilation of data in the appendices showing the outcomes for the Farm midwives. Any comparison of that part of the book to hospital statistics would make for a nice wake-up call.

Good Luck

Thank you all, great book recs and I definately have time for some reading before this wee one arrives. Luckily I'm not in such desperate need to convince dh that homebirth is the best option last night he told me that *we'd* make sure I got my homebirth because it was so important to me and going to be such a good thing for me. Yay!

I also say ready Pushed. It's gone a tons of statistics and percentages for the more scientifically minded person.

Born in the USA by Marsden Wagner. I love him. That book is fantastic. It's along the same lines as Pushed.

Dont forget about the medical benefits of home birth. All the diseases that are rampant in your house YOU have immunity to. That immunity is transfered to your newborn through colostrum and breastmilk. Many things in the hospital are foreign, and will infect your baby regardless of the immunities transferred through colostrum. This is of GREAT IMPORTANCE in choosing homebirth. Most bacterium, disease, etc, your child may be exposed to in the home he is protected against through breastmilk/colostrum. In the hospital any disease is transferrable with no natural immunization..

Please PM me if you want a copy of ina m's.. book. I have a few extra;s
