Metal water bottle - kids don't like them

After all the bad stuff came to light about plastic water bottles, I stopped buying water, and bought Sigg stainless steel water bottles for my kids' school lunches. Neither of them like them. They say the water doesn't taste "right". I can't say I've tried them, but I know that we used to have a metal "rinse" cup next to the sink and the water tasted funny in it. Is there anything to do to make it better? I don't want to go back to filling the landfill with plastic water bottles, etc.

since the SIGGS have a plastic liner I would guess the issue might be not cleaning them well. I only use water in mine and haven't had a problem. SIGGS actually sells tablets to "deep clean" the bottles. You might want to try and see if a good cleaning might help.

That is the main reason I haven't tried a KK. I too notice an aftertaste when drinking out of a metal cup.

Siggs aren't stainless steel they are aluminum, which may attribute to the taste. We have klean kanteens(they are stainless steel) and there is no taste that anyone here has noticed.

I've never noticed a difference with our Siggs (and dd1 would have let me know if she did ) so it could be a question of cleaning. Is it possible there's a difference in the water? I mean, if you're filling the bottle at the tap instead of purchasing pre-bottled water there could be a difference in taste there. (our well has a lot of iron, you don't notice it right away but after the water "stands" for an hour or two there is a tang to it... we use a whole house filter and then a second "at tap" filter to deal with this)

Could it also be that your littles just don't like the bottles? My dd1 didn't like hers till she covered it with stickers.

I can taste even the Kleen Kanteen bottles... but I have a super duper sense of taste and smell.

I have a Sigg bottle and I *hate* it.

I do have two foogo cups (one sippy, one straw) that I love, though!

You must be able to taste the plastic in plastic water bottles too then, huh? Can you only drink out of glass? I used to be super picky about the taste of water, but since I became a nursing mama it stopped bothering me so much (thirst overpowered my taste buds, I think!).

I was amazed by the difference in taste after switching to KK from Nalgene. With plastic water bottles, I absolutely couldn't drink the water if it had been sitting in there long (or warmed up in the car/sun or whatever), but with the KK I don't notice a change in taste even days later.

Not a fan of siggs either.

You know.... I think I was just so used to the nalgene taste. We have to buy the large bottles of water refills because our pipes are so old and rusty and sketchy. tHE Kleen kanteen bottles keep the water colder, but seem to almost change the texture of the water. It just tastes different to me. I am seriously sensitive though... and resistant to change! lol. I won't go back to the nalgene bottles, but I have found the metal to be less pleasant than I would like. So picky! I was laughed at for bringing a mason jar of water to the gym a couple of months back before we could afford to get the stainless ones... luckily the easter bunny brought them for us!

Kinda off topic - but I just found a site selling SS water bottles for around $5 each. The breast cancer awareness ones were $3.44!
http://www.egeneralmedical.com/egene...nk-ribbon.html

The site is a bit odd.... hard to find things. And when you click on item descriptions, they might have a different price. But if you were to add this particular bottle to your cart, you'll get a few other choices at the bottom of the screen for cheaper rates (the silver bottle, red, and pink)

But I just bought 8 of them. Shipping was about what you'd expect. I'm hoping some of my sports tops I have from other bottles will fit.... Anyway, sorry to hijack, just thought you might be interested!!

Can someone tell me what is wrong with the nalgalene?

why are they bad???

I do have 4 sigg bottles. One for each kid and one for me. my oldest LOVES his- glow in the dark skull bottle, my 6 year old likes his "pirates thirst" one but he has beat the crap out of it and I already had to return it once because paint was coming off the outside. mine, I don't use much because it just sweats so bad and I feel like I have spent so much money on these that thought of buying more stuff (insulated cover) jsut seems crazy, but I probably will do it for this summer... My DD (2 1/2) can figure her lid out, we have tried her with both kinds they have- either the twist one or the one you just push and she can't seem to "get" either one and so ends up doing a lot of screaming about it... anyone else have this issue?

At IKEA I found ice cube "trays" that make these long cylenders that will fit in the Sigg bottles to keep them cool.

dh and I hate the taste of metal as well, he absolutely refuses to drink out of them but then again he is weird about whta he'll drink out of I am unfortunatelysuper sensitive to metals, I can't even touch keys without having my skin react and go nuts trying to wash the smell off my hands

What about glass? We use the GT's kombucha bottles (for kombucha), but I dropped one really hard the other day, and it did NOT break!

it may be your water. we use KKs and i dont notice a difference in taste but we have a water cooler, so we arent using tap water (i cant drink our tap water).

I've used Sigg and KK. When I first started using them a few years ago it tasted odd to me at first, but now I realized that I was used to the way water tasted coming from plastic bottles. I still don't really like the sigg, and rarely use it, but I love my KK and don't taste anything strage at all. I recently drank from a plastic cup (at a friends house and it was just given to me, so i used it) and the water tasted horrible! She had a pur filter, just like i do, but the plastic cup made it taste awful and had a weird aftertaste.

another thing to consider is that the metal has a taste, but it doesn't give that taste to the water. So you taste the metal on your lip when drinking straight from the bottle, but the water should taste "normal" if you store it awhile then pour it into a cup.

If kids are complaining about the flavor of the water, would a bit of fruit juice cover the flavor? Restaurants are always adding lemon to cover up the chlorine taste of tap water. It doesn't work for me, but it must work for some people. (You'd have to fully wash the bottle after every use though)

I have to admit I HATE my metal water bottle (Bilt Designs). I find the lip uncomfortably thick & the bottle sweats so much & warms to the water too fast. I know it's the better choice to my nalgene but I love my nalgene so much I'm having a hard time transitioning.

Do you have the sport tops for them to drink from, or are they drinking directly from the SIGG's? If they are not already using them, maybe you could try the sport tops, so their mouths don't touch the metal bottle?

I had SIGG's and I didn't like the way they made my water taste, either. I switched to KK's and I'm much happier. But when we were growing up, these were the glasses we drank from, so I like the taste of metal.

I know that this wouldn't help the OP with a solution for her kid's lunches, but for the adults who don't like metal or plastic bottles, there are these glass ones:

I think that $30 for a set of 6 is a good price. (I know - recycled juice bottles are even cheaper, right? )

My dd started complaining that the water in her Sigg was gross too. I figured out that she wasn't filling it with fresh water often, like at least once a day. It needs cleaned often as well. DH has a Sigg and it has never tasted funky, as far as I know.

I have a KK and prefer it overall. I like the design of Sigg better but I don't get off flavors from it.

I totally know what you mean as far as tasting metal! My dh thinks I'm crazy. I can't eat somethings if it sits in aluminum foil too long or if the utensil is cheap aluminum.

I, too, am curious as to what's wrong with Nalgene?

n/m, I found it...BPA. crud...
