Nurse-out/ Family Sling-Stroller Walk for World Breastfeeding Week

I am planning/coordinating a Nurse-out/ Sling-Stroller Walk for World Breastfeeding Week in August. The ladies who helped brainstorm the concept are really enthusiastic, and so am I, but I have never, ever planned an event like this before...

We're trying to decide whether we're raising consciousness, funds, or both. If we are raising funds, they would go to scholarships to train Lactation Educators and Peer Counselors (not a "sexy" cause, but important)

I've contacted a local park and gotten info about permits and such that are required for this type of event. I've gotten in touch with a couple of other groups that could lend support. I've started to research tent rental costs (the park shelters are already reserved for the weekend, but I would like to have a large-ish, possibly climate controlled, sit-down nursing/comfort area available, as it is HOT in August!) Once the details are worked out, I will make fliers and send out announcements to the media...

What else should I do? What would you like to see in a Lactivist walk? Have you planned something like this before, and if so, do you have any sage advice/ coulda-shoulda-woulda?

Any help is appreciated!

22 views, no responses?

Pretty please, mammas? Would you go to a Nurse-out? If you did, what amenities would you like to see while there? And if funds were raised, what would you like the "cause" to be?

Thanks, wise ones

I would go.

i would want: shade, cold drinks, cookies (I always want cookies , information from local resources...

I would want the funds raised to go to some sort of outreach program to assist low-income moms and young moms be successful in their nursing relationships.

Thanks for the response!

Shade, I'm working on (getting quotes from tent-rental companies).

We'll have water and healthy snacks available for walkers and their little ones.

Literature and local organizations will be there-- part of their deal with sponsoring the walk is that they get a table for their info

--this is actually the goal of another program we're trying to get off the ground! that is already funded through a grant, though.

do you mind sharing where you are planning to have the nurse-out?

I would want: shade, water, and a snack. ooohhh, what about giving buttons out with different slogans promoting breastfeeding.

I would like to see info from local groups like LLL (to provide info on BF support), maybe some hospitals/clinics want to provide info on their breastfeeding classes and support services, maybe some local stores would like to be there to promote their breastfeeding supplies, maybe some doula services/local midwives, health food stores promoting health eating during lactation as well as nutritional/vitamin supplementation. i would be really interested in the health food stores....

I would definitely go. I would also bring my sister, who breastfeeds her 10-month-old, and my mother who breastfed all 9 of her children. She wouldn't be breastfeeding right now, but she'd be interested in supporting the cause.

I would love pro-breastfeeding gear like t-shirts or buttons or bumper stickers or hats.

I would expect water and shade. I would bring my own snacks.

Is Mom's Breastaurant available in your area? If so, get them. If not, do your beast to make something comparable.

I would hope for:
water
healthy snacks
seating in a cool, shaded or covered area
sunscreen samples - contact these people to see if they'd be willing to send you some samples for use in your event. If that link won't work for you, try emailing them at this email - info [at] missionuv [dot] com

I would also love to see an LLL booth set up with info.
Any other places/people that offer BF support.
Any places that sold gear that could be BF or AP related (such as slings).
Books sold that are BF friendly and/or BF educational.

I would love to see things sold where a portion of sales went to the supported charity and even better... All profits donated to the charity.

I would expect some sort of place so I and others could make donations (big and small). If tax receipts were available that might prompt larger donations to a registered cause

littlepeanut listed pretty much what I was thinking.

Where are you? If you are close to me I would help out some.

also~ maybe check freecycle for people willing to loan you cabana/party tents/shades

Do you know anyone in the business of what you need who would maybe be willing to donate goods/services in exchange for advertisement??
