Which hat to go with Swing thing?

I'm just finishing up Swing thing and I'd like to make a hat to go with at some point. I made it with Peace Fleece in the pale pink - I forget the name but it's got little flecks of turqouise, purple and hot pink. I used a nice sort of subdued palish turquoise for the ribbon, and a pale purple embroidery thread. I couldn't figure out the monkey fist buttons, so I'm using buttons in a similar shade to the ribbon and I think I'll use the same turquoise for the loopy closures for the buttons.

So what hat to go with? I thought something with a brim might be cute - especially if I could somehow include the ribbon/cross stitch ?

Any ideas?

I'd do a garter hat in the round from the top down, working the increase rounds in stockinette like the sweater, and then do the ribbon on those rounds. Or, a bonnet type hat in garter with the stockinette for ribbons.

dang, now you're making me want to go play around with a hat to add to the pattern.

I was also thinking something with a brim, perhaps Miss Dashwood made with wool. With the earflaps it would be plenty warm and not particularly a sun hat but rather an all season hat. You could easily add some of the detailing on the body of the hat such as the ribbon or particular stitches.

The other style hat that I think would really look nice with this coat is a simple bucket hat with some coordinating ribbon to make it stand out. I like "A Better Bucket" by Amy Swenson. If you are on Ravelry (if you are not, get thyself over there) there are lots of pictures. It is sized for an adult, but you could easily make it a tad bit smaller. I have a small adult head and my kids have approximately the same sized head as me by the time they are 2-2.5. Also (again if you are on Ravelry this link will work, if not it won't), here is a picture of one worn by a kiddo.

Theresa of Little Turtle Knits also has a bucket hat pattern.

I have been thinking about this the last couple of days. I plan to knit my little dd Swing Thing and I was considering knitting the LTK Lucy Hat (I am reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to my children right now). What do you think?

Theresa, a hat pattern to match would be wonderful!

I love the Miss Dashwood! Would that work with Peace fleece? I'm terrible with gauge. I only just started knitting in October ( I knew the basic knit stitch before then, but never really got it enough to make anything.) Swing thing is the biggest thing i've made so far. I've made 3 wee baby sweaters for my newest babe, but this is for my 2 yo. Of course the plan had been for her to wear it this spring, but life took over. IT's quite big on her tho - she's a wee 2 year old - so I think she'll still get lots of wear out of it. IT looks like there is a drawstring type thing on the Miss Dashwood hat. THat would be perfect for ribbon maybe?

I have to knit something else first tho. I'm mighty tired of looking at the pink yarn and i've got a dress for her half done that is *also pink* tho at least it's a lovely shimmery bamboo yarn and it's striped, so there's more to keep me interested. That one she will grow out of if I don't finish it soon. SHe's had a big growth spurt since I started it. No more multiple projects for me! One at a time.

THanks for the input

you could proabbyl do miss dashwood with the DK weight peace fleece, but not with the worsted.

I made Miss Dashwood, and IRC, it used the Debbie Bliss Cashmerino, which is Aran weight. DK would be far too thin if you're going to follow the pattern. I'd think Worsted would be okay if you made adjustments for gauge.

The other thing to think about is that some folks feel that PF is too rough for a hat. I've used PF and thought it was fine, but your kiddo's reaction might be something to think about too.

I think that the Lyra bonnet from the Golden Compass movie might be cute with Swing Thing. Here's a link to the pattern. Of course, that's written as a really thick, warm hat using a uber bulky yarn... so maybe it would be a bit much for the jacket...

Good luck!

I routinely sub aran weight for any worsted and nothing bad has happened yet

*Ahem* I sub without adjusting for gauge too.

But it sounds more knitter-ly and like good advice and all when you throw that comment in there!

Hmm. I wanted to use the same yarn as the coat since I have more than I needed. I don't want to buy any more yarn that's for sure - I've got rather a large stash going. The scratch factor is a good point. I'll have to see how she takes to the jacket. She's still being a total 2 yo and refusing to put it on. Of course right? She can probably tell that I'm dying to see her in it and so she's like no way no how mom!

my bad - I thought m. Dashwood was a thinner yarn (that's what I get for not checkign the pattern before posting, LOL!)
