Making a civil war era gown!

Has anyone here ever made a civil war era gown, just, you know, for fun? Think Scarlett O'Hara! I've just ordered a gown pattern (with fancy hat!) to make myself for Halloween. I'm thinking of hiring a tutor, because I know I'll need help as it will surely exceed my sewing skills. I wonder where I'll buy the hoop skirt material and stuff. It's all very exciting!! Any advice, sewing mammas?

This dress is SO gorgeous!! It will be cobalt blue trimmed with velvet ribbons and dark lace and things. I can't wait to start it!

I love making civil war era clothing! Do you have a link to the pattern you are using?

For hoop boning and corset boning, I use Grannd Garb. They have the best prices that I have found and have excellent customer service.

another place is Farthingales LA. I've never used them but I know people who have, if that helps.

I haven't sone civ war in awhile, but most likely the hardest part will be understanding the pattern -- particularly if you're using a period pattern. They cut things a bit differently than modern clothes (and some of the pattern suppliers give less than stellar instructions).

Good luck!

Thank you ladies!!! If I can figure our how (not a computer person), I'll post a picture in October, when it's scheduled to be done!
