I need help with my curtains

Thread Starter
I've had my curtain materials for several years now. At first, I looked for a person to sew the curtains for me, but was unsuccessful. One woman at my husband's work said she'd do it, but kept the material for a year and never did anything. We finally got the material back a month ago.
I'm due with my fourth baby in about a month, and have decided to just make the blasted curtains myself. Too much time has passed.
I got a new sewing machine, and have been sewing mama pads and pocket diapers. So, I think I can handle curtains.
How do I go about actually making them, though? I want very, very simple ones. I just want the top part to wrap around the curtain rod, so I can pull them open and shut. I do not like anything fussy.
How do I go about this? I need to get over being intimidated by this, and would appreciate some advice and/or tips.
Oh, and I also have a lot of material that blocks out all sunlight. Great for our bedrooms.
Thanks in advance!

The one thing that can make curtains nominally difficult is that they're tedious. We're talking about sewing lots and lots of long, straight hems. Can you do that?

If so, you just need to cut the panels to the right sizes, plus an inch of width and about 5 inches of height. Hem the sides first, half an inch per side, then the bottom, folded over 2 inches, then fold down the top 3 inches and do the last hem. That's the rod pocket. If your curtain rod is big (like, a closet bar instead of a thin rod), make the pocket bigger, but remember to cut the fabric longer to accomodate that.

Curtains are so easy and gratifying, if you're not ADHD like me.

I think the hardest part about curtains is making sure the edges are straight (so that your hems are straight). Square it off before you start sewing to save yourself a headache. I get most of my fabric from a discount store and the edges are always squirrely. Lay it out on the floor or a giant table. Line straight edge and then fold over to make a square. I guess you could also measure but I hate doing that! Also, make sure the top hem or pocket is bigger than the rod you will be using. I know that sounds obvious, but I have made some that were too tight!
