High nitrates in well water?

I ran into a mama who is worried about her well water. She said she had it tested and it came back with high levels of nitrates. She has researched it a bit and is worried about the effects on her baby, she is just starting she second trimester. Does anybody know more about this, is she truly justified to be very worried?

where I use to live there was an area where the health department sent out warnings about high nitrates in the well water- the warning was for pregnant women and small children---
