Shea Butter/Sun burn success!

I thought I'd post about my success using shea butter on my vacation last week. I am still new to all of this green stuff, and I'm stumbling along figuring out what is working for me and what is not.

So, last week we went to florida, and since I am so fair skinned, I usually bake in the sun. I cannot put sunscreen on my face because I have rosacea and any chemicals on my face causes big sore bumps that itch, burn and ooze!

Usually when I come home from FL, my face is burnt bad and peeling.

At home, I've been usuing a blend of Shea Butter, CO and EO for a body lotion, and I took it along.

Each morning I would slather it on my face, then again in the evening. While my face was red, the burn never hurt and quickly turned into a tan. There has been NO peeling at all. It made a believer out of my 16 year old daughter, half way through the trip, she was slathering it on her shoulders that were peeling. It stopped the peeling instantly.

i second that! i only burned vvery minor after being in the sun for awhile. i can burn in 10 minutes. its also great for healing a burn. its really great stuff. better than any sunscreen i've ever used, which gives me a rash.

My lips swell up anytime I use a lip balm with sunsceen. Shea butter on my lips has REALLY saved me in the sun. It totally works!

I'd love to hear more about how you blend your oils thoug. Do you liquify the shea first? What are the ratios with CO and EO (doesn't it matter which EO???)?

Thanks!!!!

I wonder about UVB though. Even if you don't burn, or burn only in a minor way, and even if your skin heals quickly, your skin cancer risk is still increased by the UVB exposure. The American Cancer Society says that sunscreen (even the high SPF that they recommend) is not enough to mitigate the risk. They recommend clothing that covers you well when you are in bright sun, and warn that the typical light t-shirt doesn't protect even as well as SPF 15 sunscreen.

Hmmm.

Shea Butter is awesome...I have a big tub of it I use everyday. I tend to use aloe when I burn though...

I'm not real picky about how I mix it. It is 2 parts shea, one part CO. I put that in the microwave (or the stove, whichever you prefer) and just soften it up on medium. I don't melt it all the way, because I don't like the consistency of it when it thickens back up. I get it soft enough that I can use a spoon to mash and stir it together, I keep stirring until it is fully blended. I then add just a few drops of EO and stir that in. I don't measure, I just add until I think it it smells good. I then put it in a jar.

I had good results on our beach vacation last year, and I simply used organic coconut oil. I love the way it smells! I am fair skinned, too, btw. : I've also noticed that the better my diet is, the less likely I am to burn. I worked outdoors at an herb farm during summers in college, never used sunscreen, never burned. I was eating really really well at the time (totally whole foods, mostly macro), and drinking a lot of water.
