The idea for LLL was hatched at a Catholic Parish Picnic in Chicago in 1956. All of the mothers were sitting around, nursing their little ones. They together discussed how nice it would be for there to be a way for young mothers to gather together in some way to get advice for nursing their babies.
The result was LLL and later LLLI. LLLI is not only a great place to get breastfeeding advice, but advice for all things young mamas need as diapering, potty training, midwives, vaccinations, solid foods, pediatricians, and simple illnesses. I have been a member since their 25th anniversary in 1981 soon after I had my first baby. I have had the great honor to meet some of these wonderful women. Most of them are now great grandmas.
And great in every sense of the word.
Dr. Mendelsohn was the medical advisor for the organization for years.
