Nursing at Smith. Nat. Hist. Museum

this weekend we visited my sister-in-law in DC and went to the Natural History Museum. every since my sister had my niece in january, my 19 mo old ds has been so crazy about babies. so of course, in a room filled with skeletons of fish and turtles, ds was much more interested in a lovely pair of baby legs sticking out of a sling than any exhibit. there was a mom nursing her little one, and when ds climbed up on the seat next to her to see the baby, she sweetly (and with no visible discomfort at all--or i would have distracted ds away of course) moved the sling aside so he could see the baby.
it struck me that this was a lovely act of lactivism. afterall, she had no idea that ds is a nursing toddler, so what a nice way to show him the natural way that babies eat. thanks to that mom and all the others who nurse in public!

of course after seeing the baby nurse, ds decided he wanted 'numps' too, so i am one of those moms as well!

Great!!!

Tangent: did you see the image of the HUGE breast with a baby nursing as you walk into the mammal area at the MNH? I cannot remember if the baby is latched on or just opening his mouth, but it is enormous and the first thing you see when you go into that section. And the video clearly states something along the lines of "Mammals are so named for the mammary glands of their mothers. Humans are mammals..."

Now if that isn't just the polar opposite of the massive baby bottle used to explain milk qualities consumed by baby whales in the other museum thread, I don't know what is
