can you just buy it at like hancock or any other fabric store or do you have to purchase it online?

Just looking at their online store collection they only seem to carry decorator silk and sheer silk in prints. In addition you would pay out the nose at a retail store. Your best bet is online.

I think a lot of people get them from Dharma Trading Co. They're very reasonable and you can get the right dyes too. The Habotai 21 1/2" squares are only $1.55.

I've been wanting to do this but haven't had the chance yet. Hope you have fun.

I have no sewing skills and no sewing machine, so I can't make my own playsilks.

I bought 12 for $60 at www.atoygarden.com and they are perfect and big...but it breaks down to $5 a silk...I don't know if that's a good deal or not, but it's the best I could find online.

If you buy them from Dharma (or Thai Silks), you can buy them pre-hemmed, so there is no sewing involved. They are all white of course, so the fun part is dyeing them. I know a lot of people use Kool-Aid or Wilton Food Dyes to dye them.

There are sometimes Dharma co-ops on the Trading Posts, so you can go in on the silks with others, which brings down the per unit price.

If you don't want to dye them yourself, then the $5/each price at A Toy Garden is definitely a good deal.

Thank you so much for the info. I am hoping to get some for my dd for her birthday she loves blankets and I know she would love a playsilk!

The Dharma silks are nice, and come in lots of sizes. They even have veils that are huge. I have dyed a bunch with Kool Aid and Wilton icing colors, and they are nice, but I can't get the color to be completely uniform or color-fast. Fine for us, but if you're a perfectionist, you may like to buy ready-made silks. I know of a coop that's about to do playsilks (maybe Dharma, maybe Sarah's Silks). If you'd like to know the name, pm me.

You can also buy hand-dyed playsilks on Etsy. A search for "play silk" brought up 70 items.

So is it really hard to hem them yourself? I don't see the already hemmed ones.

Just wanted to say that the silks I got from the Toy Garden were dyed and hemmed. They have lots of play silk items...and I had a good experience with them.
