I like to have calming music in the background like the sound of the ocean or wind or rain w/light soft music. I have a cd that is perfect. Another thing I liked was my tibetan monk cd of chants. It was so calming.
That reminded me... one other thing I do, especially in active labor but before the mind-boggling transition... I breathe deep, bringing strength in through my head and chest, and as I slowly breathe out through the pain, I think of all the tightness and pain slipping out and down, through my body, down through the uterus, down the legs and arms, out of my feet and fingertips, melting through the earth and being absorbed as positive energy to give me strength to breathe in for the next one. Like a meditation, in a circular pattern that eases the baby down and out.

I tend to lose that focus through transition but it really helps when the pain starts to get intense in active labor.

Also with the music, last time I listened to the piano music of smooth jazz artist Keiko Matsui, and WOW was it calming!! I really need to find that CD...

Oooh, just a suggestion, take it or leave it, affirmations are supposed to be positive so that there are no "nots", "...n't" or "nevers" in them. It's argued that the sub conscious is incapable of hearing the word "not" or "never" or the "...n't" on the end of the word and also that turning a statement with negative energy into a positive one is more powerful. So instead of: "I will not give up" it becomes "I embrace labor with strength and joy." Make sense?

These are my standbys for during labor:
To be said s-l-o-w-l-y with calm voice during surges...
Mama and Baby working together.
Breathe up each surge and make it work for you.
Each surge brings our baby closer to us.
Totally relaxed. Totally at ease.
Your cervix open outward as baby moves downward.
Feel the natural anesthesia flow through your body.

Think instead about how much you've already done. Each contraction that you breathe through is one that is behind you, it's done, it's over and never to return. Don't concentrate on the next one, but on releasing the one that is just past. Think through each one of what it is accomplishing for you and how it is delivering you one step closer to your child.
This is great. I'm going to use this! Thx

My "worksheet"

Here is what I have printed out for reminders during labor:

Breathe deeply, visualize your breath oxygenate your blood, visualize your blood travel to your muscles and nourish them.

Keep your mouth loose, a loose mouth makes for a loose bottom.

Kiss during contractions. That loving sexy vibe that puts the baby in there helps to get the baby out.

Each contraction you breathe through is one behind you, its done, its over. Don't concentrate on the next one, release the one that has just passed.

Imagine your cervix pulling up over the baby's head - Imagine your cervix open like a flower.

Melt into the sensation of the rushes.

Don't think of the rushes as "painful" but rather an interesting sensation that requires all of your attention.

Keep your vocalizations low.

Use gravity to your advantage.

Don't look for a way out, fully experience your birth.

Giving birth is like surfing a wave. Waves are big, strong, and uncontrollable. Don't try to control your labor, ride it out instead.

Try to experience your surroundings. What do you feel, what sounds do you hear, what do you see, what do you smell?

Don't analyze or judge, just experience the sensations.
