Which Ikea mattress would you recommend - or not?

We're looking for a new mattress, but want to minimize chemical exposure (e.g. toxic flame retardents). We can't afford a totally natural organic mattress and were thinking ikea might be a nice compromise. Unfortunately, we're a 7 hour drive from the nearest Ikea...so we'd have to order something without trying it first.

We're looking for: king size (but it will have to be 2 twins put together due to really small house, doorframes), soft enough to decrease pressure on my painful !hips/shoulder when sidelying - yet not so soft that it would be unsafe for co-sleeping. We already have a wooden slatted bed/futon frame from Ikea (old model) but it squeaks!

Any suggestions? Any models you would avoid?

Thanks

Subbing. We're getting ready to switch DD to a big girl bed so will be buying a twin mattress soon.

We have two Sultan Hasselbacks that we bought last summer and like them very much and would buy the same again. FYI, the models at the store may be a bit softer, as thousands of people have sat/laid on them. The way they measure supportiveness seems accurate to me.

We bought a couple mattress protectors that block allergens- the kindthat surround thee mattress. One can also buy a wool topper to cozily put some distance between your nose and the mattress.

I thought the IKEA mattresses smelled like chemicals for 1-2 weeks, we aired them out and did not sleep on them during this time. The conventional mattress that we bought a long time ago seemed to smell for many many months.

Finally, we also bought a MALM bed frame. Make sure you have all the parts, boxes, mid beam, and supports that you need before you leave the store. Everyone I know forgets something. IKea can be confusing. I found the bed frame pretty easy to put together myself and it is very sturdy and doesn't squeak.

Thanks, aradia! Did you buy the mattress protectors and wool topper at IKEA? Also, did you buy a box spring or the base?

We are also quite happy with the sultan hasselbaecks and have also the sultan mattress covers, made of cotton.
However, I did not like loevas mattresses that come along the sofa bed collection.
A good thing with IKEA is their liberal return policy.

Hey TefferTWH-I'm in Clarkston! Hi there neighbor!

I bought the mattress pad at GAIAM.com.. I did buy other waterproof mattress protectors at IKEA, but they have a polyurethane backing which is better than bodily fluid accidents IMHO.

We did not buy a wool topper, yet. My husband opted for the very stinky memory foam for his bed, it was around $150, he is not that happy with it, too squishy, compacts easily. The wool toppers were about $100 more. They have those at Gaiam as wellhttp://www.gaiam.com/product/outlet-...attress+pad.do I have seen organic wool toppers available as well.

We have the one mattress on a previously bought box spring and regular metal frame. The other is also on an older box spring, on the floor but we will be purchasing another MALM bed frame. That means the mattress will be suspended on the wooden slats for better air circulation.
